Just a wtf...vent

So I hired a babysitter to come a couple times a week for a few hours. I spent a good amount of time searching on care.com and found someone I liked. She had good references and was very responsive, answering calls, texts, etc.

So Friday rolls around (supposed to be her first day) and she's supposed to be there at 1:30. I texted her purposely so we'd have a record of the hours I needed. At 1:40 she wasn't there yet, so I called and texted her. She not only never showed up, she still hasn't contacted me to tell me wtf happened!

I mean obviously she's fired but... WTF!?

Tl;dr: my babysitter stood me up & I'm annoyed.

ETA: part of me is a little worried something bad happened, but on the other hand she probably forgot and is now embarrassed & realizes she's most likely fired.

  • Um yeah. That's bullshit. I hope nothing happened to her, of course. Flaky shit like that grinds my gears though.

  • Yikes! That's really weird.  I'm sure it wasn't her intention,but still.
It is really hard to find good reliable people!  I have heard quite a few business owners complain that they would be happy if they could just find someone to show up on time on a regular basis. You could screw up royally, but if you just show up most of the time you are good!

Yes! I remember when I was growing up & babysitting, my mom always told me I needed to be on time, responsive & reliable. She also taught me to leave the house neater than I found it. As a result, I have pretty high standards. This girl had already come over and met me and she texted asking for my address a week later. It kind of annoyed me but I let it go.... Oh well.

Even if it were an honest mistake, she could at least do you the courtesy of calling and apologizing.

Right? Except I'm not good with confrontation... So I guess I wouldn't mind if she never contacts me again.
  • That sucks! Hope you didn't have anywhere important to go

  • I've watched to many crime shows. Hopefully she didn't get done in. @-)

Sorry she stood you up. That's such a pain.

I didn't. I was going to stick around the house and maybe run to the store if things were going ok. But it would have sucked if I had a dr appt or something!
  • Whether the reason was that she forgot, she decided she didn't want to babysit anymore, or something more serious like an illness - she still owes you a call. I hope that nothing serious happened of course. I wonder if you will ever hear from her.

I know! I was thinking that there are very few times that you don't have anyway to get in touch with someone.
  • Knock on wood it isn't something tragic, but seriously FIRED! I can't believe she didn't show up at all or call!
  • I hope she is ok, but I would be beyond irritated if I was in your shoes. Is there a way to leave feedback on care.com?

I'm not sure! I don't think so. My husband was saying we should start our own competing website where you can leave reviews for people.
  • Wow, that is really unfortunate. Sorry that happened.

There is a way to leave reviews. But I would hold off for a few days in case something did happen.

The pic I posted a few days ago of my car accident a few years ago. Yeah. I was nannying for a family at the time. Got in the accident and didn't have a car, took a while to get insurance sorted out. I called the mom the next day and she got so Pissed at me. It was insane. She acted like I had gone out and asked someone to flip my car. She had always been so nice.

  • Ugh, that stinks!

Is there a way to find your sitter through a personal reference? I feel like the chances of it working out are so much higher when someone else has already test drove them for you.
  • That sucks. I would prob contact her as a "new" customer to see if she responds to see if something happened just to be nosy and for peace of mind, but obviously would not hire her again.

  • Ugh! I hope nothing serious happened to her. You do deserve an explanation though! Let us know if she contacts you.
  • When I babysat/nannied, I ALWAYS arrived five minutes early with the assumption that parents would need to go over instructions with me and could get out the door on the agreed upon time. I would be really upset if my babysitter was more than ten minutes late, let alone never showed. It's a job, not af favor!

Can't you find a babysitter through your moms group?

You would think so! I've tried but they either are already using someone, they use their own nanny (which wouldn't work because I need someone during the day) or they haven't used a babysitter yet.

There was one girl that was highly recommended but she is due in April! I was like... Ummm don't really want to go through that again in April.

I don't think I would have the balls to do this, anyway. She knows where I live! Not worth it.
  • I wonder if you could leave an anonymous one? I'm not sure. No one has ever left a review for me on there. They just let me use them as references.

  • So irritating. I work for a staffing company and I can't believe how often this happens. I'm always afraid something bad happened.
