Miscarriage/Pregnancy Loss

Intro and Questions - so confused

DH and I got our BFP last month and were very excited for our first baby.  I never felt very pregnant though.  No morning sickness or sore boobs, etc.  I started to have brown spotting and cramping at 6w5d until my OB finally agreed to see me yesterday at 7w5d.  At the u/s she said that there was no baby and we probably had a missed miscarriage at around 5 weeks.  There was a "blob" on the screen but she never referred to it as the "sac" - I know she measured it but I wasn't sure why.  I was so upset I couldn't ask questions without breaking down.  Since there was no baby does that mean it was a blighted ovum?  And why do I have to come back next week for more bloodwork and another ultrasound if there was no baby?  I'm still having lots of brown spotting (with clumps too) and cramps.  Can someone explain this miscarriage process to me?  Why is it referred to as a missed miscarriage if my body still thinks I'm pregnant?  Wouldn't that mean I hadn't miscarried yet?  Sorry this is so jumbled.  I really wish I was able to ask more questions while I was there.  For whatever reason I didn't feel comfortable sobbing my eyes out in front of the doctor.

BFP #1: 12/14/13, EDD: 8/24/14, missed m/c at 5w

Re: Intro and Questions - so confused

  • I'm sorry you are going through this. I also had a "missed miscarriage" around 6 weeks but it wasn't discovered until 8 weeks. I didn't have any symptoms of a m/c- no spotting, cramps, etc.

I am unclear myself about the difference between a "blighted ovum" and a mmc- not sure if there is a difference. But when I had my first u/s at 8 weeks, they saw a fetal pole measuring 6 weeks and a sac measuring 7 weeks, and no heartbeat. So I was asked to return the following week for another u/s and to do bloodwork twice (3 days apart) to check my HCG levels- this was to verify that this was in fact a m/c. This all showed that my levels decreased and in the second ultrasound the baby hadn't grown, still no heartbeat.

Did they verify that it was a m/c or are they checking next week in the u/s to see if the baby grows?

  • @Sweetiepops they did not see a baby at all or fetal pole or anything.  Which is why I'm confused about getting another ultrasound.  My hcg levels came back at 2815.  I was supposed to be 7w5d when the levels were taken, but I think those hcg levels are in the 4th week range.  They are testing my levels again on tuesday.  I guess I'm just confused about all the verification and what exactly happened with the baby.  Was there ever a baby?  Did I pass it?  Did it just not grow?

  • I also had a missed miscarriage at just under 6 wks discovered at 8. My OB did 3 u/s and blood work to determine if there is any growth. EDD is usually based off of LMP but maybe you O'd late and are off on your dates.
When my OB suggested this I googled it and it does happen. I just wasn't so lucky. Natural m/c at 10 wks.
They have to do their part to make double-sure you have miscarried.

  • If you did ovulate later than you thought and you are earlier along than you think, it's possible that they wouldn't yet see the fetal pole. As babynica said, they need to re-check the u/s. It's not the most accurate form of testing. HCG levels Tuesday will help you to know more. Best of luck.

  • A blighted ovum is when a sac forms but no baby ever forms in it. A mmc is when a baby forms and dies and your body never recognizes the loss so you dont have any symptoms of miscarriage. I would call and ask more questions if you are unclear. You should understand whats happening and what your options are.
  • The blog she measured could have either been your uterus itself or a clot or the sac inside your uterus. Or if she was looking at your ovaries it could have been a cyst.
As.for the bw, its to make sure your levels are going down. if theu go up, that is usually an indication of an ectopic pregnancy. PP explained the dif. between blighted ovum and mmc.
From what you describe, it sounds like you havethe sac still but no signs of a baby which is blighted ovum. But I agree, call and ask questions to get more clarification,

  • I had several US before I was even 7 weeks because no fetal pole was found originally and I had some bleeding.  My midwife wanted to check to make sure I didn't have a late bloomer, she said sometimes the fetal pole doesn't show until 7-8 weeks. Granted we finally saw a fetal pole at 6 weeks but it stopped developing a few days later and my later US showed that.  I mc at 10 weeks. Your doc is probably wanting to do all they can to make sure it is actually a miscarriage. It is normal in most cases I have heard about to have more blood draws and US to really make sure. There are small percentages of misdiagnosed miscarriages because of mishaped uterus or other medical things. Or as the PP said they want to make sure its not ectopic.  Its a big waiting game when it comes to this. I'm sorry you are going through this, it is never easy.

  • I'm so sorry. PP have given you good info. The limbo waiting part is the absolute worst. Once you have a definitive answer, you can make a decision and start to heal. Until then hang in there. It's so very hard I know.
