Better at BFing?

When did your LOs get better at breastfeeding? Like, normally Ari nurses for 1-1.5 hours to be full. But today she has been nursing, at normal increments, for only 20 minutes or so. She's 3.5 weeks. I did give her 2ozs of formula when we were at DHs soccer game (as I had pumped right before we left) and I know that can make them fuller longer. So I'm not sure if she's just a little fuller from formula or may just be getting the hang of BFing more efficiently.

Re: Better at BFing?

  • My LO only eats about 15 mins at each boob and sleeps for about 2 hrs.

  • My LO is almost 5 weeks and has started doing the same, but my pedi warned me that the 6 week growth spurt would make her ear like crazy, but then she'd even herself out and get more efficient eating and we could start working on a schedule.
  • My first son came out of the womb eating for 15 minutes on each boob (30 mins total at each feed) until he was at least 4 or 5 months.  However, he NEVER ate more often than every 3 or 4 hours.  I would try to feed him more often if I knew we were going out and he would refuse if it hadn't been at least 3 hours.  My point being he was never a quick eater but always made sure to eat until he was full.  DS2 eats more quickly but more often.  It's helpful at night to only be awake for 20 minutes but during the day he eats more like every 2-2.5 hours.  I guess my point is that in my experience my older one took a long time to become more efficient, but he was never a super long nurser.

  • It got a lot better for us around 4.5 weeks then the six week growth spurt hit and it has been crazy. Hopefully it will settle back down in a day or two.
  • Luca only nurses for about 10-15 on one breast. Sometimes it's only around 5 minutes. I have a fast let down so he eats too fast and then spits half of it up. I wish I could slow it down a little.
  • My LO has cut down on how long he feeds for as well and he is four weeks.

That happened pretty early - maybe at a week or two of age?
