Just curious how long did you do basic ab work. I know there gets to be a point where its just uncomfortable but wanted to double check what others have heard or know from experience.
I stopped when I entered the third trimester because I read somewhere you're not supposed to in the third. My moms stomach muscles split with my little brother so I'm paranoid this will happen to me too. I wish I'd done more in the first trimester.

ouch! That sounds awful! I def. plan to stop by 3rd trimester. I am early along and just wanted to hear what others are doing. I appreciate your feedback.
On my doctors advice, I talked to the trainers at the Y where I work out. They had me change a few things right off the bat, concerned about stressing my pelvic floor and protecting my back, but not my abs specifically. We would talk every so often when I was in and adjusted as I progressed. I worked out all the way to the end of my first pregnancy, and I don't think they had me modify my ab work much until pretty close to the end. I mostly remember them being worried about my back, and then teaching me alternatives when I couldn't lie on my back. This pregnancy I'm mostly doing yoga, and right now (only 5 weeks in) my teacher had me modify the twists and take it easy when I feel my heart rate go up. (This yoga class is definitely a cardio workout.)

I was also told to watch the rotation(twists) too. Glad there's some consistent advice out there.
I have been wondering about the twists as well. I am only 10 weeks along, but I read that some yoga moves can inhibit blood flow to the uterus, but can be fine with modifications.
I do things like plank and core strengthening things that don't involve crunching my stomach/uterus. I've been working out fairly regularly since before the pregnancy and now into my 3rd tri but I am aware of concerns like ab muscle separation and stuff. I walk and do the rowing machine for cardio and free weights in a circuit program, and don't worry too much about a lot of specific ab work.
I think thats the laying on your back issue. My teacher has mentioned that later in pregnancy I can do those positions but with a hold of no more than 30 seconds. If you're taking a class, your teacher should help you modify. My understanding is its actually something they have to know to be certified.
