Every Night (vent)

LO is 10 days old. For the past 5 nights, she cries and fusses for many hours. It usually starts @ 5-6 and goes on until 1-2, sometimes later. We have tried everything to calm her - swaddling, swinging, crying it out, gas drops, pacing the house for hours with her, putting her in the car and driving around. It is so incredibly frustrating. Everything I have read about colic says that it usually starts around 2-3 weeks but this started when she was a week old and is Every. Freaking. Night. She'll settle down for a few minutes at a time but then goes right back to screaming. She is formula fed and has plenty of wet diapers and usually 2-3 dirty diapers everyday so I don't think it is constipation. She goes back to the pedi on Monday so I will ask about it then. There's really no point to this post other than for me to just vent my frustration with the situation and see if anyone else has a similar issue with their LO and has found something that helps.

I wonder if your brand of formula is not agreeing with LO? Have you tried a different brand or type to see if that helps?

Oh, good idea! I'll bet @BoothBaby is onto something!

  • Sounds like colic unfortunately. We thought LO might have it and some people I talked to about it said in their experience a formula change helped. Ask the pedi about that. I know there are some for like gassy stomachs and such, maybe something like that would help.

I'm sorry you're dealing with this though, it is so frustrating!

  • We were using Similac Advanced and just switched to Similac Sensitive to see if it made a difference. I may pick up some GerberGood Starts the next time I'm at the store to try that. I love DD with all my heart and it kills me to hear her wail every night for hours. Not to mention it does not help my already existing anxiety issues and baby blues that I'm battling. DH has been awesome but he goes back to work next week so I will probably be dealing with the fussiness on my own.

  • I had that problem with my first DS ... I felt like he cried non-stop. He wouldn't breastfeed so I formula fed him as well. Finally when he was around 3 to 4 months I switched his formula from Similac to Gerber Good Start and it was magically like he became an entirely new baby. I don't know if if was coincidence or not, but I was so glad he was happier.

  • Please don't let her cry it out. She is way too young for that.

I agree that you might try a different type of formula.

  • DD was colicky. It was horrible. I am so sorry you're dealing with this. Since you're doing formula, I would try some different kinds formulated for sensitive tummies and gassy tummies. I would also try giving her gripe water drops--will help if her issue is gas. Also in the evening under your close supervision, I would try letting her sleep or lay on her tummy--that always helped mine. Also, the little vibrating bouncer seats seemed to help too. Good luck!
  • Can we clarify what you mean by crying it out?

  • By crying it out I mean just letting her cry for a few minutes while holding her. We never walk away from her while crying and do everything we can to try to soothe her. But sometimes after so many exhausting hours and nothing helping her, we will just hold her and let her cry. It's usually around the time I'm crying as well. That doesn't last long because it breaks our hearts too much. I bought Gerber Good Start Soothe formula today and will be trying that. I also bought some Gripe Water. The only kind Target had was Little Remedies and I have heard better reviews from other brands but I figured I would give it a try.

  • My lactation specialist said there are massage techniques. Also try to swaddle really tight. Just a few suggestions that I got to help:)
  • Try putting the vacuum on!!!
  • I'm not an expert by any means, but it sounds like the formula may be bothering her. Have you thought about a soy-based formula in the off chance she's lactose intolerant? Keep us updated, and I hope things get calmer for you guys! Hang in there.

  • Do you warm the milk? My first DD was colicky so we finally switched her to enfamil gentlease, it's for fussiness & gas, it worked wonders ontop of using dr brown bottles and warming her milk, hopefully you find relief soon!
