Chick Fil A

There has been a good bit of Chick Fil talk recently, and I wanted to share this that I read earlier in the year.

https://m.huffpost.com/us/entry/2564379/

I know that this doesn't automatically get rid of all of the things they have supported in the past, but it jives with what I know of the company - I have several friends who work there. I grew up in the southern baptist community, with extremely conservative family and friends. I have watched my family accept and love, with open arms, my cousin who came out as gay several years ago, but it was a process. It's not easy for anyone to let go of or grow past what they were taught and grew up with, but that's the whole point of equal rights activism, right? To help educate people and help them see where they are being hateful, even if they didn't get it then. I think Chick Fil A is going down the path of learning from their wrongs and growing themselves. It doesn't erase the past, but change is our goal, right? For them to figure things out and begin to change their ways?

Anyways, I just didn't think a lot of people knew about how they are slowly changing, based on posts. If you want to keep boycotting, that is fine, I won't argue that and I'll understand. But I wanted you to know that all of the boycotting and being upset with them has already started to make a difference and it appears they are making and have made changes.

  • I agree, bigotry is hard to weed out. It's a slow process. It was a slow process for racism to be weeded out (and unfortunately isn't completely) BUT it's an important process. I've seen the change in my family and friends, and it's possible. And isn't that the whole point of the boycotting and protesting? To encourage change? Shouldn't we notice and encourage it when people/organizations start to change?

I understand your thoughts about the PR stunt, but I think that if it was a PR stunt then more people would know about it. They would have advertised it more. But that's not the case - they haven't gone out of their way to turn it into a PR thing. I mean, who knows for sure, I'm not in their shoes. But at least it's a step in the right direction.

To me, boycotting isn't JUST about encouraging change. That is a big part of it, but in this case, I don't want to spend my money at a place when I know part of the money will be spent to support agendas with which I strongly disagree. Yes, according to the article, they have withdrawn their funding of "the most divisive anti-LGBT groups," but that's not enough for me. That's saying they still fund some groups with an anti-LGBT agenda, and I don't want my money going towards that.

(Plus, their food isn't anything special to begin with! ;) )
  • Fair enough. I don't have any issues with anyone still choosing to boycott.

@ChicagoChic82 I don't honestly know why but I think it's because it reminds me so much of my family's journey. My parents are about as conservative, southern baptist as you can get. They grew up immersed in a culture that is hard to break free from. But they are also some of the most loving people I know. And it was a process when my cousin came out for them to change. But they did and, during the process, my cousin was very understanding and encouraging, and my parents never quit showing him love. I just know so many people like that and I know they can change and I want to encourage that. So I get excited seeing Chick Fil A starting to make changes.

  • Soooo many companies (actually most out there) donate to many different charities, organizations, etc. I honestly don't even bother worrying about who donates to what anymore otherwise I wouldn't patronize most of the places I do. I'm a staunch catholic and I don't agree with abortion. There is a large website that lists companies that donate to women's organizations who supposedly fund, or support abortion and the woman's right to choose. I think most of the companies i patronize are listed on that list.

I will admit I am lazy and don't feel like doing research on every single company where I spend money. But when it's brought to my attention like in this case, I make changes in where I spend my money if I feel it's necessary. I never really went to Chick-Fil-a much, but there have been a couple of times when I was at the mall where I would grab something there. Now I won't.

ETA: I don't expect everyone else to change. If they want to eat there, that's their choice. But I will not and I don't feel like I should have to justify my choice.
  • Really don't care about their political views I like the food. I don't really understand while people are so shocked when conservative Christians come out and say they don't agree with same sex marriage (chick-fil-a, duck dynasty etc) it's their right to agree with and support whatever they believe in. As long as they aren't trying to push their believes on me I don't really see the problem with them holding their own opinions (BTW I completely support same sex marriage I have a sister who is gay... This situation doesn't change how we feel or what we believe is right)

  • Bwahahaha, is anyone now getting the "Do you support Chick-Fil-A?" ad coming up on the bottom of your screen now? Creepy Bump ads!
  • I'm mobile so I can't see ads - I hate the stalkerish ads though! Haha.

I'm mobile but I see them. Are you using the app? (I use the browser.)

I see them now in my browser. I guess I don't ever scroll all the way to the bottom...? I don't know. I just didn't see them anywhere before.

  • I try really hard to back up my beliefs with my actions and have a super long list of companies I won't buy from. I know it's not for everyone and I understand chicfila is "changing" I still will not buy from them.

    Edited my post sounded jackassy.

    Same.

Exactly this. If I made it a point to research and swear off every single company that donates to a cause I'm not fond of, I would have nowhere to shop.
