Preemies

Preemie crib transition

When did everyone transition thier preemie into thier crib?
LO is 19weeks actual / 9 adjusted. I can not fathom the idea of her not being next to me in her RnP. It's not for fear of any breathing issues, she has none. I think it's my own fear of her just not being there, right next to me.
My H says it's time to start. I say he can sleep in her crib and she can take his spot. Lol.

Re: Preemie crib transition

  • L slept in her crib in our room from day 1. We were in a 1 bedroom apartment until September (when she was 4 months actual, 2 adjusted) but kept her in the crib in our room until 3 weeks ago (7 months actual). Now she's right next door in her crib. I check on her multiple times before I go to bed and wake up several times during the night too. We only have a regular monitor, not a video monitor, but I'm not sure that would help because when I go in I watch to make sure she's breathing and I couldn't do that with a monitor. And she doesn't have breathing issues either. I'm just paranoid!

  • I'm so glad you asked, OP! My LO is 12 weeks actual, 7 weeks adjusted and I have no idea when we should transition him. His room is right next to ours and we have a video monitor, but I can't imagine having him so far away from me while he is still so small. I think I might go by weight- when he hits 10 lbs maybe?!?!
  • Our LO was in the NICU for 67 days then he slept in his bassinet in our room for about 4 weeks. Then we moved him into his own room with a baby monitor and it was amazing how much better all of us slept!!!!! It was a rough few nights for me, worrying, but we never looked back. We also only use his room for sleeping, no playing, so he knows its sleep time when we go in there. Sometimes he will immediately start crying, if he's not ready for bed, and other times it almost seems like a relief to him. He can literally fall asleep within minutes. I'm so jealous!!! LOL. We also keep it very quiet except for the white noise machine and dark. Good luck!!!!

  • LO has been in her room for a couple weeks now. She's 22 weeks/12 adjusted. We just decided one day that she should because DH was afraid the RNP was making a flat spot. We swaddle her and put her down either fully asleep or pretty darn close. We have a white noise machine, but her o2 concentrater makes a similar sound. She's giving us about 8hrs each night. It's nice not to have to tip toe in our room.

    Good luck :)
  • @Lacijaxx I just noticed you changed your name! Do you just have a regular monitor or a video monitor? I feel like I'm behind the times with my regular monitor!

  • Thank you all. I still feel so nervous about this. I can't decide what to do. We have a video monitor and a regular monitor. Our LOs room is across the hall. Probably about 25 feet from our room. I am sure no matter what noise she makes I will hear it. I'll keep you all posted as to what I do. My H has no say. I know that's mean but he just doesn't get it.
  • We kept her in our room for 6 months in the RNP, then moved her to her room in the RNP, and finally, at about 7 months, started transitioning to the crib. You have to do what makes you comfortable. Although I wasn't ready to move her until 6 months, we did all sleep better once we moved her.

  • @KTZ17 Yes, I shouldn't have used my name to start with. So I asked to have it changed. Silly me!!!

@Throw3ks We just have a plain Jane monitor. I was going to get a video monitor but hubby talked me out of it. He knows me well. I would have been glued to it. And I can tell exactly what LO is doing just by listening. While I'm sure they're nice, they def aren't a necessity.

It will take you a bit to get comfortable with it but its a big step in the righ it direction. Just take it slow. It'll be worth it in the end.

  • We made the switch at 6w adj, which was shortly before I went back to work. We all slept better! DS didn't have any breathing issues, either, but I armed him with a Snuza. That helped ease my mind when he was in the other room. It was a pretty easy transition for us, actually. Good luck!

M was in the rock n play in our room until she was 6 months (4 adj).  She had reflux, so I really thought the rnp was helping, but by 3 months (1 adj) or so, the meds mostly had that under control (except for spitting up) and she wasn't choking much in bed anymore, so I guess we could have transitioned then.  At the 6 month pedi appt, the doctor was like, you have to transition because she's going to fall out.  A week later or so, I found M sitting up in the rnp holding onto the sides, and I was like, okay, we have to move her...  I think 6 months was a little too long, but 3-4 months or so is not.

Oh, and we do not use a monitor.  M is in the room across the hall, and we hear her.  It is better to let her fuss a little before we go in, because she often goes back to sleep.  I would not feel comfortable having her on a different floor until she's 3 or so.
  • We went straight to cribs when they came home from the NICU, actually. Granted, DD2 struggled enough with reflux that she spent good chunks of those first few weeks in the bouncer. My mom was also able to help us for 4-5 nights/week (AMAZING), so someone was always "on-call" with them -- and we had the Angelcare monitors as back-up (not to mention DD2 was on a pulse-ox for the first 6-8 weeks, too).

  • Ummm he was over 6 months (4 adj) but looking back we probably should have sooner. We all slept better when he went to the crib. That said I'm sure it will be hard to have a future child not next to me too so we'll see haha

  • I completely understand your anxiety. They slept right outside my bedroom in the bonus room in their RnP. Then, they became what I felt was too big to sleep for so long with their legs bent. I think it was around 4 months actual/2.5 months adjusted. I had major anxiety the first few nights they were in their room even with a video monitor. Each night seemed to get a little easier. Sometimes I wake up and go check on them. They'll be soundly sleeping, and I'm up checking on them or the thermostat or something!

  • I have posted about our sleep issues, but She slept swaddled in the rnp in our room until she was 11 months (8 adj). The crib transition (with magic sleep suit) was not as hard as I thought it would be but we did have a good solid nighttime routine first.

  • I'm terrified of not having her in the room with us. She seems to be right around the age you all started to transition so I better grow a pair and start with putting her in her crib for her naps. It's my own irrational fear and selfishness as to why she is still in our room. Maybe I will try this week. I was hoping everyone would say "still in our room and LO is 10+ months old". Lol.

I will note that we are no where near naps in the crib yet. She still won't nap anywhere but on a person! I would love to get her in the crib but I'll probably need to get blackout curtains first.

  • My boys are 4 months, 2.5 adjusted and we're transitioning now. We moved RNPs to nursery for two nights then put one baby in his crib. He's been in there for a week now and I honestly think he is sleeping better. Tonight we're going to try the other twin.

  • I tried the crib for a nap and she shrilled as if someone was killing her. Needless to say we will try again in a couple weeks.
