When should I worry?

So E got his first fever today. He slept until 830 this morning after taking a bottle at 5am, which is later than he normally sleeps. Then while we were out running errands this morning, he refused his bottle and just wanted to sleep, again not normal. Came home, refused another bottle. By this time it was about 1 so that's when I took his temp and found it to be 102. Gave Tylenol, went back to sleep. He did eat some yogurt about 230 and was awake about an hour. Then slept again until 530. He finally took 4oz of formula at 6 tonight, which was his only bottle since 5 this morning. Now he's asleep again. His temp is down to 99.5 after the Tylenol. I plan to check temp again and give more Tylenol if needed. Long story.....but if this continues tomorrow should I call the pedi? Or is this typical teething behavior? He's had a total of 10oz today and oatmeal and yogurt for meals. And a total of 2-3hours of awake time all day.

Re: When should I worry?

  • Is he still making wet diapers?  If so, I wouldn't worry... if he won't eat at all and isn't peeing, then I'd call the doc.

    This.

I'd also give him Tylenol again.

Sounds pretty normal for a sick baby. My dd has the stomach flu at re beginning of the week. She would drink maybe. 1-3 oz bottle and total for day was low around 15 oz The online nurse said if they didnt have a wet diaper in 8 hrs then you need to worry about dehydration.

You could also try adding in some pedylite between bottles. And if they won't take we have used a medical syringe to feed it to our dd.

  • Also, I'm sorry that your LO is sick!  That is so hard to watch. :-(

  • Is LO congested at all? Coughing? My DD had a low fever for a day. I gave her Tylenol a couple times and it went away. The stuffy nose and cough didn't get better so I took her in and she had an ear infection. If your LO is stuffy etc and it gets worse and not better after a day or two I would take them in. Ear infections are rampant this time of year.

  • Usually 3 days of a fever warrant a call to the pediatrician. At least that's what mine likes.
  • It's definitely not "typical teething behavior." He either has a virus or infection. If I were you, keep his fever down with Tylenol for a day or two... Usually a viral fever will go away by then. If it's still there on Monday, maybe take him in to see if it's an ear infection. Hopefully the Tylenol will keep his fever down enough that he'll take some formula. Also, when DS was sick he refused his formula but would drink water from a sippy cup like a frat boy shotgunning a beer. Maybe try and see if he'll take water to keep him hydrated.
