The best baby gate for top of stairs?

Hi everyone I'm trying to determine what the best baby gate is for the top of our stairs. we have a wrought iron railing so one side is wrought iron and the one side is the wall. Does anyone have a gate that they love? I'm looking for something that will be both functional and somewhat stylish... Thanks in advance!

Re: The best baby gate for top of stairs?

  • We had a hard time finding something that worked with our bannister, which is very wide and we didn't want to drill into it. Like you, we have wood and wrought iron but the only thing that ended up working well for us was this ugly white metal thing from Summer Infant (which is now discontinued except for occasionally on woot.com). The moral of the story is, you may end up having to try a couple of things. I was surprised that they weren't a bit more one-size-fits-all.

    Just an FYI, tension gates should never be used at the top of a staircase.

  • I ended up making ours for top and bottom of our stairs out of PVC pipe covered with fabric. They slide between the wall on one side downstairs and the bannister railings on the other. Upstairs, there are railings on both sides and it just slides between them. They are pretty and super-functional. Our 18 mo old who is far too smart for her own good hasn't been able to conquer them so far. They fit too snugly for her to be able to slide them out, but they are v easy for us to lift out and put aside. I found the idea online when I couldn't find an off- the-rack solution that worked on our stairs.
  • I love my Evenflow gate that you screw the hardware into the wall/banister.  I really didn't want to drill into our house, but in the end my desire to keep DS1 safe was stronger than my desire to not mar the woodwork.  We found this gate: https://www.diapers.com/p/evenflo-top-of-stair-plus-gate-158862?site=CA&utm_source=Google&utm_medium=cpc_D&utm_term=EV-193&utm_campaign=GooglePLA&CAWELAID=1406032559&utm_content=pla&ca_sku=EV-193&ca_gpa=pla&ca_kw={keyword}

    We've had it for 8 years now, and it's still like new!! The gate part easily comes off the hardware (easily for an adult anyway) so you can store it away when you don't need it.  The hardware can be painted the same color as your wall/banister so it blends in more.  We just left the hardware up from when DS1 turned 3.5 and didn't need it anymore to when DS2 started crawling.
