Any June 2014ers Nursing While PG?

Hi all!

I was wondering if any other ladies here are nursing while PG? If so, how's it going? Any plans for weaning/tandem nursing?

I am 18 weeks PG and am still nursing my 2 year old (he'll be 3 in early March).  I think my milk's almost dried up because I don't hear him swallowing when he nurses anymore, but he still asks once or twice a day!  The nipple pain is really starting to get to me, I think it's getting worse now that my milk supply is decreasing.  As for weaning/tandem nursing, I'm uncertain.  I like the idea of tandem nursing and I DID really want to let him self-wean, but the nipple pain is really starting to get to me.  Plus, the logistics of tandem nursing seem challenging.  No plans to wean yet, but I'm open to the idea at this point.  Anyone else grappling with these questions?

On a separate note, I just borrowed "Adventures in Tandem Nursing" by Hilary Flower from my Midwife Center (they have a small lending library).  It is a great book and I have related to so much of it!  I'd highly recommend it to any nursing while PG ladies and anyone considering tandem nursing.

  • I'm still nursing my 2-year-old as well! Like you, I really wanted her to self-wean, but nursing is her favorite thing EVER. We changed up her nighttime routine so it's all dad now with no nursing, but I'm a SAHM and haven't been able to figure out a suitable substitute for the pre-nap nurse. And then there are those times when she's just upset or hurt...

I wasn't planning on tandem nursing, but I really, really hate the idea of making her completely stop. But it's really getting painful at times for me as well, so I'm really torn. And when I think about the last time I'll ever nurse her, it makes me tear up. Ugh.

  • Yep, still nursing my 17 mo old 2-3 times a day. I'm going through the same dilemma about whether to really encourage weaning or do some minimal tandem. The latch really hurts, but not bad after that. I do get sad feeling like This is my baby, how will I balance a newborn? Kudos to us for extended nursing. :$
  • I'm still nursing my 19m old 4-5 times a day. No plans on weaning, but hoping to get him down to 2-3 times a day by the time baby comes (we are already making progress as just a couple months ago he was still nursing 6-8 times a day and now we are mostly at 4 times a day). I will tandem nurse if he doesn't self wean before June (I do not see him self weaning though). So far we haven't had much pain except for occasionally when he decides to have a super lazy latch
  • I am also still nursing my 2 year old. The pain sucks so she is down to bedtime, weekend wake up and if she wakes up and comes to ask at night. I am hoping to tandum nurse until she self weans. Mostly I can reduce the pain by relatching her.

  • I'm still nursing my 17 month old. We just night weaned which went a lot better than I had anticipated. In the last few weeks nursing has become really painful, I almost can't tolerate it anymore. She's mostly down to naps and bed time, so I'm hoping to just wean her completely before June.
  • Great to see so many other extended BFing moms due in June!  It's nice to hear that I'm not alone in grappling with the difficulties of BFing while PG and whether or not to tandem nurse.  Good luck to you all!

  • I was nursing DD, until my milk completely dryed up around Christmas. Sadly that was 3 weeks shy of my goal of 1 year. She started biting me in frustration, and that combined with already sore nipples and no milk anyway made my decision. It was a sad day (New Years Eve) when I finally pulled the plug, and I have had to deal with feelings of failure, and check myself a few times when I feel really guilty, but we've both been much happier since (I think she was probably hungry for the last week or so).

  • I am. My little girl is 18 months. I just recently stopped nursing her to sleep for naps and bedtime. I'd love to have her wean before the baby arrives but we'll see. I've tandem nurses before and it's not my preference but if it's too traumatic to get my toddler weaned then I guess I'll be doing it again! Lol
  • I nursed DD until I was about 10 weeks pregnant. She was 21 months. I cried the entire day after I nursed her for the last time. But she handled it it MUCH better than I had anticipated and I can honestly say that as sad and apprehensive as I was to wean her I have not regretted it for one moment.

Aw, you shouldn't feel guilty or like a failure.  You nursed to almost 1 year and that is a BIG accomplishment!  It's much longer than most babies nurse in this country.  Plus, it sounds like you made the right decision for both you and your DD.  You should be proud of the gift you gave her!
