Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Evenflo vs Cosco convertible carseat

Anyone own either one of these? We are looking to switch out from our infant carseat and unfortunately are probably going to have to purchase 3 seats (one for each of our cars, plus one for our daycare provider - my SIL who has to tote other children to/from school occasionally). While we're looking into Chicco/Britax/Graco for our cars, I'm considering a more budget option for our SIL since she doesn't have to drive her everyday. But I'm looking for feedback on these 2, if anyone has any. I've been reading review on Amazon and other sites as well.

TIA!

Re: Evenflo vs Cosco convertible carseat

  • I bought the Evenflo Symphony for DD#1 when she was 6 months old. It was a fine seat, but bulky. She out grew it rear facing just after 2yrs old. I went out and bought the Dionno Radian RXT so I could keep her rear facing.  DD#2 now uses the Evenflo Symphony so not that big a deal for me.  If you want to keep your baby rear facing as long as possible chose a different carseat.  We like our Radian.  If I had known I would have skipped the Evenflo and bought the Radian.

  • Check out Car Seats for the Littles on Facebook.  They are a great resource and can tell you what is the best/safest seat for your child and/or car.

  • The Cosco seat is tiny. It won't last you long enough RF. The Evenflo is iffy if it will get to and past 2 RF. My 4 favorite seats are the Chicco Nextfit, Graco Headwise/MySize/Size4Me, Clek Foonf, and Diono Radian RXT or r120. These seats are true ERF seats. Britax is not. Their shells are very short.

  • Thanks for the input! I'm pretty sure I'm going with the Chicco Nextfit for myself since that's the seat she's in the most. I really just need a budget seat for my SIL. She's only in it once or twice a week, so I can't justify spending $200 on a seat for her. I'm pretty sure I'm going to go with the Evenflo for her. I read better things about it than the Cosco one.

I did come across Car Seats for the Littles and got some good insight there.

What about the SureRide? It's listed as a recommended seat on CSFTL.

It's not an ERF seat, unless you have a very very short kid. It's not unsafe or anything, but not the seat I would recommend. Since I only recommend high shell ERF seats.

Sorry I'm hijacking now.... How short? DH and I are both short (5'2"), and DS is already on the short end (25th percentile).

The shell height is 26.5, which is pretty small. It'll be about the same longevity as a Britax seat would. So not long. Maybe, and I mean maybe 2 years. It's best to RF till closer to 4 when the bones completely ossify. We personally RF till 4 or when they outgrow their seats around then.

  • We have a Cosco Scenera that we had DS1 RFing in until 2 yo. DS2 will probably outgrow it before 2, so we will have to get him something bigger, but for now it's fine. It's simple, no frills. Thin padding, but DS1 never complained.

We got an Evenflo to keep at my parents' house who we visit a couple times a year so that we wouldn't have to bring one on the plane. It is a little wider than the Scenera, and perhaps a little taller and more padded, but not hugely different.

This source says the shell height of the Radian and SureRide are both 25". Either way, with a DC that's 25% for height, I think you have a lot of options. We personally have a Graco MySize and Diono Radian.

  • That is true, but the radian is lower profile. This gives the seat much more room for growth. I've seen the Evenflo. It's your typical convertible. It's more on par with a Graco MyRide. Which the seats aren't good for ERF. They are ok seats. Other than longevity issues there is nothing wrong with it. You just won't get the same life out of it. Which to me makes the seat not worth it. I'm really strict though. All my relatives that drive the kids have Radians. Since to me the cost of the seat is worth it for my child to stay alive in the event of a crash. I know not everyone has that view or the capability to afford this. So it's totally up to the parents. ERF is super important to us as a family.
