Gestational diabetes with twins, very nervous!

Is there anyone else out there who is or has been diagnosed with gestational diabetes?
I am 30 weeks today with twin boys. I have only gained 12 lbs so far, but haven't had the energy or time to exercise so not sure if that could be part of the problem.
They literally just called me and I am told I will need to go to a class, test myself 4 times a day, and change my diet. I am just concerned because I already eat low carb, I don't drink soda or juice, and very few processed foods to start with. So I am not sure how to change my diet more, I hope this class has good information.
Any advice, menus, tips that you can pass on would be greatly appreciated!! Thanks!!

  • Your doc should refer you to a nutritionist, I have to send a daily carb log to mine, diet didn't work so on insulin like all my pregnancies :) but it will go away when you have the babies and its only for a couple months that you have to deal with it so don't sweat it! My nutritionist gave me a big old booklet of meal ideas, very helpful and google is a great source for diabetic meals

  • Also check out the high risk board, there are a lot of ladies on there with GD and lots of great tips.  I had GD with my first pregnancy, though not this time around, and they were a great resource.  With GD it's not just what you eat, but there are other factors.  For example, you always want to eat a carb with a protein (carbs are anything like breads, fruits, and even milk), you also want to eat small snacks between meals to keep your blood sugars level, then take at least a short walk after you eat a meal.  I'm sure they'll cover specific recommendations for your situation at the class.

  • Thanks for the tips!
  • Yep...BTDT twice. It's caused by hormones so it's not really something that can be prevented. Most times the first step is diet control. It's all about balancing your meals and snacks and your nutritionist can give you pointers for your specific situation. If you need ideas just let me know.

  • @kjkarats03 thank you! I may ask for some meal/snack ideas. I have an intolerance for eggs and peanut butter so unsure on how to start my morning off for breakfast protein.

Yogurt and cheese may help out there a little, but you could also go with some "non-traditional" breakfast proteins. A lot of times I'd just make a variety of snacks for breakfast...string cheese, a turkey wrap/sandwich, small helping of fruit, etc. I would eat a small meal or snack every few hours instead of bigger meals and snacks, that's what worked best for me. Everyone processes the glucose differently so you'll need to play around to find what works for you. I usually had the best numbers in the morning and evening, after lunch was my highest test most days.

Don't cut out carbs completely, just limit them to what your nutritionist says is a good level and make sure you get plenty of fiber, protein, and healthy fats with the carbs to balance things out.

  • I had GD with my pregnancy too.  At first I was really bummed about it but I got used to it.  My best advice was to mix protein with all of your food.  I loved the Light and Fit greek yogurt, cheese, trail mix.

  • I had it too. The funny thing is that I probably ate less healthy with it. It truly is about balancing the carbs with proteins. I ate a lot of Greek yogurt, protein bars, peanut butter, cheese, hummus and watermelon because that was the only fruit that was counted as free. Good luck, it is really not so bad.

  • Same here. I eat clean, low carb and healthy. I have GD and on Metformin AND insulin. My MFM told me I'd have it w twins bc I have PCOS. Sure enough, I do. I wasn't even tested. My DH is a juvenile diabetic so I started testing my sugar and it as sky high (no wider I was so sick). I was already on Metformin for PCOS. They put me on insulin immediately. I didn't need a nutritionist bc my diet wasn't the issue. MFM said it has to do w placentas and twins.
