Miscarriage/Pregnancy Loss

Wondering what this could be....

Hi All,

I ended up m/c on 12/9. I was just over 5 weeks. I had bleeding for about a week, discomfort, etc. Following the m/c I ended up with a horrible uti (which I wasn't not even aware that I had) and even thru one round of antibiotics, I am still feeling symptoms. Also, I have not had my period yet, post m/c.  My significant other and I were told we could start trying after the m/c for another pregnancy, but even though I have not had my period, all my tests from home come back negative. I guess my question(s) are: How long did it take for you to have a cycle after m/c? If you tried after a m/c, has anyone had similar issues as myself with no period, yet no BFP? And lastly, the UTI with the symptoms (discomfort, pressure, etc) could there be more to it than just a UTI and possibly something m/c related?

Thanks so much for any and all help!

  • Typically if you haven't had your period for 60 days after your m/c you should call your doctor. It takes your body a little longer to "restart" after a m/c so your periods may be irregular for a few (1-2) cycles.

  • I'm so sorry for your loss. I had my m/c on Dec.11th, very close to yours. I just got my period back on Wednesday (about 28 days post m/c), but the OB told me it could take 4-8 weeks. So at this point I wouldn't be concerned about your period not yet returning.

I am a little concerned about your UTI symptoms though- sometimes antibiotics don't clear up all of the bacteria and you might need another round. Also different antibiotics will kill different types of bacteria, so it may be that the antibiotic you took was not for the right bacteria that you have. Maybe go back to the doctor and have another test to see if you still have a UTI?

  • I'm curious if your UTI happened after you and YH started trying again or if it was already there? I ask because we had sex this past week (about 3 weeks after m/c) and now I have a horrible UTI. I've been wondering if the bacteria introduced during sex caused it - the timing seems more than coincidental. Maybe that is the case for you. I ignored by doctor's advice to put nothing in my vagina for 3 weeks and had sex several days before I was cleared to. :/

  • Sorry for your loss. I have read and been told that you should not put anything in your vagina for weeks following a m/c or D&C because it can cause an infection. So perhaps that explains the UTI. Something you can do to help prevent a UTI is drink cranberry juice (pure stuff not the Ocean Spray nonsense) or take cranberry supplements. As for the period matter, I was told that it could take 4-6 weeks for it to come. I think you are still in the gray area, but if you are really concerned, then talk to your doctor.
  • I agree with the other posters. If AF doesn't show within 60days that warrants a call to your doctor. If you're still having UTI symptoms, see a doctor/call your doctor back. They will probably either have you come give another urine sample and/or start you on different antibiotics.

As for AF to show back up, it's different for everybody, but my natural mc, af showed up right on time without skipping a beat. Now after my d&c's, it was 45-50days before AF showed up.

  • I'm very sorry for your loss. I didn't have my period for 50 days after mine... Our doctor said we should wait 2 full cycles, but even then I was terrified to try again. Good luck to you!
  • After my first M/C it took 7 weeks to get my period.  My most recent one happened on 12/3 and I'm still waiting for AF to arrive.  Anything between 4-8 weeks is perfectly normal.  I'm sure everything's fine, you just need to be patient...easier said than done, right?

  • I m/c on 12/3 and didn't get AF until 1/10. The doctor told me it was because my hcg levels had to go back down to 0 before the process would start over. I still had a positive test on 12/17 when I went in for my 2 week check. So he told me anything up to 6 weeks after a negative test was normal. The waiting stinks regardless - especially if you are waiting for the 1-2 cycles before trying again.!
