There goes my freedom....

I went out tonight with some friends, DH & I got a call at midnight from MIL telling me she is refusing the bottle, so sad panda here.

I used to give her a bottle before bed time. She started refusing bottles from me and binkies from MIL last week , but would still take a bottle from MIL.

Now she is refusing everything. I'm so glad; I am a SAHM. Otherwise this would be seriously stressful. However, I won't be able to go anywhere for long if she refuses the bottle.

I wonder if I should try another brand of bottle or if it's a waste. I've already tried Tommy Tippee, Avent, platex ventaire, and Platex with drop ins, which was working great for awhile.

She used to take a bottle. Wonder what changed. I don't leave her that often, but it's nice to have the option.

  • We had this issue last weekend with LO as we were gearing up for daycare. He suddenly wouldn't take the bottle from DH. We freaked out of course .We then tried a different bottle (were using first year and tried dr browns) and it worked! Not sure why he suddenly refused the other one but he did.
  • You probably know this, but you def need slow flo nipples because she is used to having to work for her food bfing. Even some bottles that claim to be slow flo are not slow enough. Like the Avent drowned my LO. He does the best with Dr. Brown and the nipple that comes with the 4 oz bottles. I also have nipples the hospital gave me with green tops that work great.

  • I know exactly how you feel. I went back to work this week and LO has yet to really take a bottle. Each day at daycare she's taken about an ounce all day. Then she comes home and wants to nurse for Hours. Luckily dh has been taking care of dinner, dd1, and the rest of the evening routine. You're right this is seriously stressful! Good luck, maybe this is just a phase?
  • I use Dr. Browns bottle with the newborn nipple size. My LO only gets the bottle in a blue moon but when he does it's like a treat because he doesn't have to work for it. Maybe try the bottle at a diff time of day then slowly move it back to bed time again.

  • Are you feeding BM? Was it stored? Could it be a lipase issue causing the milk to taste bad once stored?

  • Is it possible it's got more to do with your mom feeding her than the bottle? Skye has recently gotten stranger danger. She sees my mom at least once a week and the past two times she has watched her she's been a pita taking bottles from her.

  • I'm in the same boat.  Caleb has taken bottles since he was about 2 days old.  A couple weeks ago he stopped taking them from me and last week stopped taking them from DH.  I only work away from home one day a week but I'm now afraid that day is going to suck for DH taking care of him.  We'll try some different bottles and see if it helps.
  • DS is also refusing a bottle although he JUST took a tommee tippee yesterday, thank goodness. I go back to work in 3 weeks.

What I did was have only an oz or 2 in the bottle so if he doesn't take it I'm not wasting a ton of milk. Then I'll nurse him a little bit so he's not starving. I then burp him and put him in the rock and play right in front of me and offer the bottle. For a while he would just chomp on the nipple and not suck but doing this over the past couple days has helped and he finally took 2oz yesterday.

He still won't take them from anyone else and forget trying to hold him, he freaks out but at least I can get him to take one from me for now. Next step is having Mh give one.

It's progress, but I'm with you on how frustrating it is.

  • LO started doing this a few weeks ago and it really stressed me out. She will only take the MAM pacifiers so we tried the MAM bottles and she loves them. The nipple is shaped well and it comes with low flow nipple, we ordered ours off amazon. She took almost 6 ounces pumped milk from my mom yesterday (crazy GS!) but seems to love eating from these bottles! Good luck!

She has denied both breast milk and formula. Last night it was formula. The plans were very last minute and I didn't have time to thaw any. I was also curious about that lipase problem. I want to thaw some milk and see if it's still normal.

  • Does she refuse the bottle if you are the one feeding her too? Our LO began rejecting the bottle when I was away and I became very worried I would never get to leave again. I tried giving her a bottle myself one night and she took it. The next time I left her with a bottle, I left the sweatshirt I had slept in the previous night. My DH wrapped the bottle in the sweatshirt and she took it like a champ! I always leave something with my scent on it now and she hasn't refused the bottle since... She just missed me I guess!

I'm gonna try and give her a bottle of expressed milk tonight. So we will see. She has been refusing her night bottle as well, lately.

  • No advice, but sorry your night out was ended quickly because your baby was being a baby jerk. My baby is also a major jerk when it comes to all pacifiers and bottles.

  • I love that "baby jerk "

  • Yep, she denied the bottle with breast milk too.

I don't go out that often so it's not a huge deal. Just odd that she used to take it and now won't.
