Out and about with a PT'd 2 year old

My 25 month old DS is newly potty trained. At daycare he uses a urinal and at home he uses a potty seat on our toilets. I'm wondering what I should do when traveling with him. I know that he will be afraid to sit on a large toilet w/o a smaller potty seat on it. Are there any recommendations from BTDT moms? I know that there are foldable potty seats - are those worth it? Is there a specific brand that is better than others? Luckily my husband can take him to use a urinal whenever he's along, but if I'm with DS by myself then I need to be prepared to use public toilets.

My DD sits on a big toilet. I usually have to hold her the whole time or else she will get scared that she's going to fall in. She will not poop on big toilet without her potty seat ever though. If she says she has to poop we usually try to head home. If we are at family/friends houses we bring our potty seat.

My DS can also stand and pee, so when in public, I pull down his pants, and actually stand him on the public toilet seat (while holding him of course). He calls it 'tinkle too high' and likes the novelty of it. I'm just happy for him to not have any contact with the seat. He waits until he's wearing his nighttime pull up to poop, so we don't deal with that just yet.

Foldable was too flimsy for my kiddo too. He stands to pee (I hold him if the toilet is too high) and I held him under the arms as he sat to poop for a while. Now he can manage alone and doesn't want help sitting. He will be 3 in April.

Thanks everyone! I just ordered the folding seat from diapers.com today, so I'm bummed to hear it didn't work for others. Luckily it was only $9. I'll try the potette next, and maybe as DS gets a little more experienced he will be wiling to let him hold him on a big toilet.

You said he would be afraid - but has he tried? I'd see how he does first w/o making it a big thing and you might be surprised. But, I have the odd kid who doesn't even use a potty seat insert at home anymore - she used it for 6 weeks or so and declared herself a big girl, "I NOT A BABY!!!!" So yea, no potty seat.

We tried at Grandma's house (without a potty seat on the big toilet) and he was afraid. He wanted nothing to do with it and ended up having an accident right in front of the toilet. I tried again later, but he wouldn't relax. He went just a tiny dribble and then had an accident in their living room 5 minutes later.

It's a good idea to keep trying the big toilet to get him used to it, but I need a back up plan too.

I'm jealous that you're potty seat free (its a bit of the PITA!)

I thought he's be afraid of the big scary public toilets but it's the opposite. He thinks it's so cool. I've brought my seat with us (when I have a stroller to hide it, since it's not the foldable kind) or I've just held him. But, what works the best is the potette seat that I keep set up in the back of my car. Unfortunately the potette does not work for us when it's perched on top of a toilet. The seat is too narrow and cuts off his circulation. He cries owie and tries to jump off. I wish it did though because then it would be our one-stop solution.

Potette plus was awesome for us. You can use it as a stand alone potty or ring. DD was afraid of the big toilet for a while after she PT at 26 months (she isn't a big kid so that was probably part of it). It folds up nicely and I just had a special bag to carry the potty in. It isn't very bag really so it wasn't a nuisance. I got the cheap diaper sacks at Walmart to use instead of their special pee bags that were really expensive.

I just wanted to give an update, in case anyone else needed pointers on this topic.

We were traveling this weekend (visiting great-grandma, dinner out at a restaurant, and spending the night at grandma's house).

I remembered a PP on this thread, and I held my DS standing on the toilet seat and let him pee into the toilet. He is used to using a urinal at daycare and he had no problems with this! It was easier than I thought it would be too (in terms of explaining it to him and it wasn't messy at all).

The foldable potty seat wasn't very good. I don't think he felt secure enough on it (it slips around and is pretty flimsy). But it would work for going #2 in a pinch.

So for mom's of boys, I think standing on the toilet is the way to go! Thanks for everyone's suggestions!
