June 2014 Moms

Bottles????

So I started my baby regester at babies-r-us today, and was compleatly overwhelmed in the baby bottle isle. So many choices, so many styles. I stared at that wall for like 20 min then finally walked away. I do plan on breastfeeding but as a FTM I know it might be hard or I may not produce enough milk, so I wanted to have some just in case. Is there anything I should look for in these bottles??? Or any suggestions??? Please help I'm lost

Re: Bottles????

  • I looked at Lucie's List and asked my friends that breastfed. I ended up registering for Dr. Brown wide bottles, and the Comotomo Nautral bottles. Basically, these were the best anti-colic bottles that closest resemble a breast. But, all babies have their preferences. I have a friend who swears by the Avent bottles, even thought the reviews aren't great, because it was the only one that her baby would take.

  • Each baby may like a different bottle. Some babies it takes sampling each bottle until you find that right one, even with BFing. I've heard it suggested to register and/or buy a couple bottles of a few brands to see what your baby likes. Instead of investing in a whole set.

We used Dr. Browns from the get go and never had any issues with DS. The extra parts are a pain, but it worked for him so we stuck with them.

DS #1 born January 2010. DS #2 due June 2014.

  • Glass bottles can't be used in a daycare center--just an FYI.

When my second DS was breastfeeding, the only bottle nipple he would drink from was the playtex drop-in brown nipple.
  • I registered for Tommy Tippee bottles. They are supposed to be most like the breast when transitioning back and forth between the two. That being said, I am a FTM, and will have to find out in June if it really works. Good luck!!!

  • We used Dr. Browns (PITA to clean but worked well) and Playtex VentAir.  We had Tommee Tippee that DD hated.

I would suggest not buying too much of one bottle until you know what LO likes.

  • I got the wide, works like a boob nipples when C was having trouble nursing and she had the same screaming, crying, I can't latch on this reaction to those that she had to my boob. I would register for one or two of those, but also at least one classic nipple just in case. We used doc browns and loved them.

  • I have an excellent book for you to read actually- the ultimate breastfeeding book of answers by Jack Newman, MD and Teresa Pitman. AMAZING go-to for FTM :).

  • I agree that every baby is different and you may have to shop around. For my oldest, we used the NUK bottles with the we'd nipples (he was breasted too). For our second, we used the Medela bottles and Tommy Tippee (he wasn't breasted because of difficulties).

  • I tried Dr Brown's and Tommy Tippee and didn't like them. Embed up going with the medalas because they hooked right up to my pump and Audrey liked them. I really liked that I could pump right in the bottle.

  • I breast fed DS but when I would pump he refused every bottle. We finally found Tommee Tippee and it was the only one he took. A friend of mine was having the same problem and I told her about Tommee Tippee and her DD loved them. Every baby is different though so I wouldn't go out and buy large amounts of the same bottle just buy a few of each and see which your LO prefers.

  • We use the playtex and similac brands. It took a little bit of experimenting to see what would work for DS.

I'm not new. I just hate The Bump.

  • Born Free for both of our LOs. They have a few extra parts but never leak. Plan to use them for #3 as well, just have to buy new nipples.

  • I was just at Babies R Us too and the lady there said to pick out two different types a small and big pack of each.  Then you could try one of each, see which is better, and then return and exchange the big pack of the one that didnt work.  She suggested Tommie Tippie and Dr. Browns.  So thats what I did.

  • Ds like dr browns but I always hated washing them. When he got older We switched to Playtex drop-ins. This time I am going to try Playtex drop-ins first and go from there.
  • Thanks for the great advise. Back to babies-r-us I go. Ill pick out a few :)
  • We are going to do our registry today and this was very helpful because I was clueless about this - THANK YOU!

  • We tried Dr Browns with our first and then switched to Avent Natural. Our son had reflux and we saw no difference in bottles but the avent were much easier to clean and recommended by the lactation consultant. Daycare was also much happier with our switch.
  • Question! Are the Dr Browns/Tommy Tippee/etc bottles different than the bottles that go with your breast pump????
  • I was wondering if anyone had any experience using the first years breastflow bottles?

  • I breasted and pumped and when DD drank out of bottles we always used AVENT. She didn't have very much gas with those compared to other brands.
  • I breastfed DS, but I always used Playtex Drop-Ins for pumped milk.  Those bottles appealed to me simply because they were the easiest to clean.  Thankfully, DS took them well and we didn't have gas/colic issues.
