Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Visitors (esp. grandparents) and flu shot... what is your stance?

I spoke with my doctor about this a month ago. She recommends that everyone visiting with LO have the flu shot and TDAP booster. We spoke with our parents about this, especially because they will be around so much more/longer and help care for our older DS. My FIL and step-MIL are refusing to get the shot. FIL because "a lady at his work was paralyzed after the shot...." and step-MIL "I always get sick after them...."

I have an appointment today and will speak with my doctor about her thoughts on this. I know we can't MAKE them get their shots and they are entitled to do what they want with their bodies/health. That said though, we CAN say "no visitors w/o the flu shot."

What is your take on this after speaking with your doctor? How do you handle visitors, especially during flu/cold season?

Thanks ladies!

(ps. I did use the search function and read many posts, none answered the questions I have above though)

  • @Finnaroo

Thank you for your comment. DH and I will have a discussion tonight after speaking with my doctor again. I wish his family wouldn't put us in this situation to NEED to have this discussion. We had the same expectations when DS1 was born.

    Thanks again!

  • You can't protect baby from everything. There are ways to help prevent spread of illness. It's your right to say no to visitors but I personally think its ridiculous to expect everyone coming into contact with baby to have these vaacinations.

I didn't make anyone but DH and me get the flu shot. If you get it a few weeks before you deliver your LO will get some of the antibodies from you. If you breastfeed LO will get even more.

I don't think the flu shot is as much a worry as the TDAP. I did make grandparents get those. I didn't demand anyone else get it though. My doctor said anyone spending a lot of time with LO should have it - so I took that to mean anyone who was coming for multiple visits and babysitting a few times. Now that LO is almost 3 months old and has had 1 pertussis vaccine I'm not nearly as worried about that.

Thank you and I realize this. I also don't expect EVERYONE coming into contact with baby to have these vaccinations. I am talking about grandparents that want to come stay for a week at a time. Which is what my doctor recommended.

    Again, thank you.

  • You can't get the flu from the shot, but the shot doesn't protect against all strains of the flu. I see many many people get the flu despite getting the shot, which is one of the reasons I think it's pointless. Also, you CAN get the flu from the nasal spray form, since they use a live virus.

  • All grandparents did flu and Tdap without us asking. MIL has the same primary physician as I do, so he encouraged it, and my mom is a cashier at a pharmacy that offers vaccinations.

  • Personally I would never get the flu shot nor would I expect or force someone else to. My daughter is 3 (vaccinated with the basics) other than random colds she has never had the flu. It's awful to see your babies sick.... but without building thier immune system you're going to see them sick a lot more. Back away from the hand sanitizer!

The flu is much more serious to an infant than it is to an adult or even an older child. It doesn't make her over zealous to be insistent.
I know- but just because you get the flu shot doesn't mean you are 100% protected either. Plently of people do not get the flu shot and are never affected by it.

But plenty of people do not get the flu shot and ARE affected by it.  Others (think immune compromised individuals, elderly, and infants) are also affected by their decision to not get the shot.

I would rather be 50% protected than 0%.

    Just saying.

Vaccines build your children's immune systems with far less risks then gambling with their health.
Exactly.  I've never understood why people who are freaked out by vaccines are so cavalier about the possibility of infection by the actual disease.

Let's see... exposure to a small amount of a dead virus in a form considered safe for infants and pregnant women under the supervision of a doctor, or infection under uncontrolled conditions by a full strength live virus known to cause fatalities.

I know which one I prefer!
