? For STMs who had epidural before

I have been reading that in most cases when an epidural is given it is necessary for a urinary catheter to be placed as well. Did anyone have this done when they had an epidural? If so was it placed before or after the epidural was given? If done before epidural was it painful? And when was the catheter removed? Thanks in advance for any info you can provide.

They put the urinary catheter in before the epidural... and i honestly have no idea when they took it out... which means it obviously wasn't painful!

Btw, a lot of FTM don't know this, but the epidural it's self is given to you via catheter as well...
  • For me it was done immediately after the epidural was placed and it hurt! It was removed while I was pushing because it was in the way.

  • My catheter was inserted after the epidural and i felt nothing. The midwife removed it when it was time to push and i didn't feel that either...

Yes I have read about the process of the epidural itself and I know that a catheter is inserted into your spine.

  • After the epi. No idea when it was removed. I was actually happy to get the catheter because I was allowed to leave my bed since DS was so high still he never dropped and they were worried the cord would deliver early. So I had to use a bedpan when I had to pee which was tricky.

  • It went in after I had the epi placed.  To the point I didn't even realize that I had one until the nurse said she was removing it so I could push.  Obviously mine didn't hurt at all, coming or going.

  • Yes. It was placed after I was numb & removed before I got to push.

  • Yes, they give you a catheter. You have no feeling or control over your bladder. They put it in after you get the epi and it doesn't feel like anything. Even if you could feel it, it doesn't feel like much. They take it out when you are getting ready to push.
    Yup, this exactly.

  • The catheter was placed after my epidural and I didn't feel a thing.

  • With my first one, yes. They put it in after the epidural so I didn't feel anything and took it out before it wore off. The second time, they didn't do a cath. Once they finished the epidural it was time to push, so they may not have had time. I think it's standard procedure though. If everything is going smoothly I would assume they'd put it in and take it out while the epi was in effect. You can always communicate that with them if your worried about discomfort. The catheter is the most dreaded part for me :-S

  • Weird, I didn't get a catheter automatically, instead they came in and used one to empty my bladder and while they did that, they noticed the baby's head was far down and it was time to push. So I never felt it go in or out, as I had an epi.

  • I know I got a catheter. Whether it was before or after the epidural, I have no idea. I also don't know when it was taken out. So yeah, obviously I was more focused on getting the epi!
  • I freaked out about the idea of a urinary catheter. It was my #1 reason for not wanting an epidural. When I did get one, the nurse promised she wouldn't put the catheter in until after the epi. So I didn't feel a thing. It came out when I was pushing.
