do onesie extenders work?

DD is in cloth diapers which means that her onesies are running a little short.  I see her growing pretty quickly and am starting to worry that I didn't bring back big enough clothes to last until we are back in the US in July to buy some more.  She was small at birth, and I thought she'd probably stay that way--not so much.  I can try to find some baby clothes here, but the supply is limited and probably quite expensive.

Has anyone used onesie extenders?  Do they work?  I saw some reviews on amazon that were pretty critical, saying that the snap size didn't fit hardly any of the onesies people had and that the extenders therefore weren't worth it.

And, for your time, pansy cat gif

Re: do onesie extenders work?

  • Yeah, they have babies here of course.  But they mostly put them in funny weird clothes.  So to get "normal" baby clothes I'd have to find another expatriate who has a baby girl that's a size up from mine, and that's a challenge.

I was going to get the extenders on amazon and ship them here.  They're smaller to ship than a bunch of bigger onesies.

PUT HER IN THE WEIRD CLOTHES!
I was looking for a good "pics or it didn't happen" gif response to this, and I randomly found this.  At first I side-eyed my search parameters, but now I'm thinking, maybe it actually fits.

Alright, I edited out this meme because some posters felt it was offensive.  Seeing in the light that they did based on the comments, I have chosen to remove it because I see their point and agree.

  • I DID find several plantain onesies while searching for st kitts/caribbean/west indies onesies. Plantains are almost bananas.
We have a plantain tree in our backyard.  We planted it just over a year ago, when it was knee-high.  It now towers about 20 feet tall and looks like it should start spitting out plantains before long--possibly right around the time DD is ready to eat them?

Puh-lease. If we've learned one thing this month it's that she was ready for those bad boys weeks ago.
    Be sure to add water.

  • I got the Iplay onesie extenders from Bye bye baby a week ago and they are being returned. Not only do they not line up correctly but the nipple of the snaps are too small and come right off. I tried them with Carter's onesies and Gerber BTW. Sucks I was super excited about them because DS1 has outgrown his 24month onesies and I can't seem to find them in 2t or larger. Damn it!
  • Lol hate to interrupt the culture, but I have an answer to the original topic..

Onesie extenders usually do not work well. Buttons can vary in spacing and types, so you have to get extenders that are brand specific, which can get expensive. I just leave the snaps undone and pull some pants over it.

@jennlin How dare you answer the original question?
That's too bad to hear though.  I was hoping onesie extenders would save our bacon.  Sounds like no such luck, and we don't use pants here, so we can't leave the onesies unsnapped.  Sad panda.

I'm still voting for #culturalclothes. You want her to fit in, don't you?

Locals come up to me on the street and shout "cute white baby!"
    #shesthewrongcolor
    #wonteverfitin
I know how that goes. My parents live in Mexico. When I was little and on vacation down there it was all "ohhhhhh!!!! Ojas azules!!!!"

Same thing happens to my ds1 (baby's first trip is this summer!) all the time! People always want to get a good look, always ask the typical questions ( is he yours? Is his daddy white? Are you sure he wasn't switched at the hospital?) they want to bless him and kiss him. Usually it's people my family knows although strangers have tried too but my uncles don't let strangers near him.

Maybe the sock thing is a Caribbean thing? Even in DR babies must wear socks all the time and they are always covered. I was actually really surprised my brother got a car seat for my nephew zamir. Almost no one uses car seats. Do they use them in st kitts?

And take pics... We need more culture up in here
It's tough to get pics of infants here.  The parents basically don't take them out of the house ever.  When they do, they bundle them up in warm clothes and blankets.  When we take DD out with just a short-sleeved onesie on, they tell us she'll catch cold and she must wear socks.  Yeah, it's 86 degrees every freaking day.

Here's some pics of the adults, though, for your culture needs!

Now, before you try to go the "But that's how they really dreeeeeeeeeeess!  I'm just documenting it!" route, let me just say: Bullshit.  Save your energy.  If you don't get how "Haha, look at the funny black natives wearing weird clothes instead of normal ones, and boots full of flowers and chickens on their heads, lol cultural lololol!" is racist as fuck then nothing I can say will change that.  But it is.  Just so you know.
except nobody said that it was funny. And nobody mentioned the color of their skin, either.

  • Racism is passing judgment of inferiority/superiority based on race--which I definitely didn't do. I said the clothing available for infants is weird. That's my judgment on clothing, not the people wearing it.

I would never walk down the street and say "cute black baby!" I was reporting what others had said about my baby and acknowledging that she looks different regardless of what she wears.  That's truth, not racism. Racism would be thinking she's somehow better than a black baby which is absolutely to how I feel, nor what I said.

Also, the pictures I included were in response to the poster asking for culture--evidenced by me quoting the poster who asked for culture and saying "for your culture needs" just above the pics.  These are good examples of St Kitts culture taken at their annual Carnivale festival.  I did not post them in any form of mockery.

I live in a foreign country because I love experiencing other places, people, and cultures.  DH and I prefer to live and work abroad as opposed to just traveling (though we do that too) because we get a full cultural immersion.  Does that sound like the ideology of a racist or a culture-mocker?

That sounds like a safe answer coming from someone who got caught making culturally insensitive comments and actions.
It's not a safe answer. It's a use your brains answer. But since apparently you seem to have issue with a use your brains answer, here it is in black and white (oh wait, is that racist?? I mentioned color there guise)--I am not racist in thoughts, words, or actions.  I live abroad to experience other cultures, not to judge them as inferior to my own.

  • I honestly don't get how it us racist. Someone asked to see examples of their culture. She put up interesting pictures of culturally different things. I am really not tying to white knight for anyone. I am just confused.

so it IS like saying "i'm not racist but i wouldn't date or marry outside my race" (aka only white people are acceptable aka discriminating based on race aka racist).

you saying their way of dressing is weird and not normal = your way is better aka the white way is better aka racist.

it may not be racist-racist but it's racist.
@Crunchymama11 I think i see what you're getting at, but take a look at it from my side for a moment.

Let's say you had a friend who moved to the US a year ago from China. She brought her wardrobe with her from China when she moved. Now as her clothes are wearing out, she chooses to order clothes from China because she says clothes in the US stores are "weird".

As an American, does her choice offend you?
Do you think she is racist?
Or is she just choosing the fashion she is more familiar with and likes?

@huntjul, I normally don't jump into these discussions on here, and I don't think you're a racist, but I am a bit disgusted at one of the pictures you posted. I think @quartermisses might have hinted at the same thing I'm talking about. It wasn't showing their culture, and the clothes being worn aren't "weird" Bc they're different, it just shows someone who is poor. I think you can "use your brain" to figure out why using that picture in particular was in poor taste.
I concede that one picture was a bad one to post.  I apologize for the offense.  Now if I take it down everyone's going to say "look! That proves she's a racist!" But if I leave it up, I chance someone else will be offended by it.  That ones a no win.

I stand by the St Kitts culture pictures as apt pictures of culture.  Those who are IMAGINING that I am scorning them by posting them are incorrect on that count.

  • I think the issue here is the connotation of the word racist, however appropriate it may be. @huntjul would you settle with offensive? The original discussion was not in the interest of educating anyone regarding a different culture, you were clearly poking fun and carrying on like it was all a big joke. Once you got called on it you changed your tune. So yes, it was quit offensive.
  • @katiemm623 yup super racist. America is made up of thousands of cultures. American culture is hard to pinpoint as there are so many exceptions. Still, saying blanket statements like "Americans dress their children in such weird clothes!" Is offensive and hurtful. "High fashion is weird" can be hurtful, but probably true ;p fashion in America is something that isn't really true of all Americans so it's hard to make blanket statements like that. But idk, I guess I think its mean to say anyone is "weird" since everyone is so unique and cultures can be very important to people. It sounded like a very ignorant statement at the very least. "I think crocs are ugly and not my style" is different than "Americans wear ugly shoes" because it's a generalization and isn't necessarily true, it's an opinion...but now you've made it a cultural norm that you're judging. Does that make sense? Idk. If they all wore crocs and she said "I don't like crocs and I wanted some other shoes from America since they don't sell them here" that wouldn't be racist. Saying "the shoes here are so weird! That's why I have to get shoes from America" is rude and probably racist to some degree because you look down on their culture. Idk it just sounds off.

Obviously I have to settle for "offensive" because it clearly has been to some bumpies, though my intent was not to be derogatory towards their available infant clothing.

I'll re-answer the original question in hopefully a more PC fashion: I prefer US infant fashion to St Kitts infant fashion.

I know everyone is dying to hear my opinion on this... So here goes
  • And the bump just cut my hole comment!! I think they are trying to tell me something.

Anyways, I think that making this racist is grasping at straws. I usually don't agree with Huntjul because she says stupid things, but this doesn't make her racist.

I am not racist in any shape or form, I think of everyone equally. That being said I say that I think the Italian style is ugly. I think the middle eastern cover everything on a woman is wierd. It has nothing to do with skin color or thinking I am better than them, I just don't like it, and think the way I dress is better for me. There are other styles I don't like but I was just using those for example.

She didn't mention skin color, did she? Am I wrong for thinking race is different than culture? I always thought they were.

    To me wierd =\= racism

    You're Welcome!

  • Race:

    1. A local geographic or global human population distinguished as a more or less distinct group by genetically transmitted physical characteristics.
    2. A group of people united or classified together on the basis of common history, nationality, or geographic distribution: the German race.
    3. A genealogical line; a lineage.

It has nothing to do with huntjul hating people because they have dark skin if that's the hang up. She just is being offensive with the "my baby can't wear their weird clothes" statement. I don't think she even dislikes the people of St. Kitts. I just think her statement was rude. I've called a lot of things weird before but never a very general, "my baby clothes are better" weird statement. :p

  • This article popped up on my fb feed and it's too much of a coincidence not to post: https://www.buzzfeed.com/azazello/16-things-russians-do-that-americans-would-find-we-cqjf The title is "16 Things Russians Do That Americans Might Find Weird". It just describes some cultural differences between us and the Russians. @btimes, it appears you are easily offended by these things, will you be letting the author know they are "racist as fuck"? It seems like the consensus is that hunjuls comments/photos were offensive but not necessarily racist. I just don't buy the othering arguement.
