Potty Training

Yesterday, Tumaini started putting her dolls on a play potty she has. She would put a doll on the potty, wait a few seconds, wipe the doll's bum with toilet paper, and do the same with the next doll. At the end of the day, she was sitting herself of the fake potty, giggling then wiping her crotch with toilet paper. I think that means our window of opportunity for toilet training is here, and I am not ready. Any Website or book recommandation, or any advice?

Re: Potty Training

  • We're having the same kind of thing, except she's now doing the "potty dance" and when I ask if she has to go to the bathroom she says yes and goes to the potty, sits on it, and then says "done" and stands up. I just found a book for my kindle that's apparently on sale today, called "The Parent's Guide To Potty Training Toddlers." I have to say this step scares the heck out of me.

Even a minor event in the life of a child is an event of that child's world and thus a world event.

  • I found this:  https://www.ahaparenting.com/ages-stages/toddlers/easy-toilet-potty-training

It's probably what we'll be doing for a while, except for a few things I'm not willing to do (I will not have a potty in my kitchen...).

  • OMG the idea of potty training makes me want to curl up in a ball. The only thing DS does that indicates readiness is he'll tell me when he's pooping. It's like strain....grunt...then "poo poo." I've heard girls are ready earlier so I'm not even thinking about it yet, lol.

  • Kellen is definitely not ready. He never tells me when he poops or acts any differently at all. The only thing that has changed in the past few weeks is that when I ask him "do you need me to change your diaper" he used to shake his head and run and now, maybe 50% of the time he will come to me and put his arms up (basically a yes) when he actually has a poop.

Oh, and he started grunting in the bath the other night so I quickly sat him on our adult toilet (no kiddie seat) and told him to go poo poo and he grunted and tooted a few times and seemed to get what I was telling him to do, but no poop. He really liked sitting there though and wants to do it after his bath almost everyday now, but only for like 30 secs and then he's done. And he has never actually gone while sitting on it either.

  • Emily has been telling me "poop" when she needs to pee.  Wrong label, but we rush to the potty when she says it and she pees every time!  She's been doing it about 2-3x a day for a week or so.  Even though I've done it before, I still feel like I don't know where to go from here.  It's super early!!  Ben didn't start this early, but he was totally trained shortly after his 2nd b-day, which is crazy early (especially for a boy).... Maybe my kids just have super bladders??  Idk.  I do nothing special to get them to do it.  We'll see if Emily continues, or if it's just been a lucky week!

  • I had hoped to start introducing the concept around 18 months but Dagny is nowhere near ready. She won't tell me if she's gone and is content to sit in a dirty diaper. So I will wait a few more months and hopefully start then.

  • Hunter goes pee on the potty about 75% of the time now. He says pee and goes to the bathroom, even dumps the pee in the toilet when he's done. He tells me he's pooped AFTER he has gone. I attribute 100% of this to his Montessori school. They only do training pants so he's learned to recognize when he needs to go. It took about 8-10 weeks of him being at school to really catch on

  • Here is a great manual I found online. We started at 9 mo. sitting her on the potty and by one year, she was regularly going pee. Now we are working on pooping. I am not pushing anything and am letting her lead the way. We are pretty close though. https://www.canmoredaycare.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/01/pottytrainingbook.pdf
