NBR: Can I Nerdgasm for a Minute?

Since we have a few academics and academics-to-be on the board - Way back before Luke arrived I was accepted into a specialized seminar for the spring 2014 semester (resume builder and great opportunity for research & professional development, focusing on all things digital and technological). It starts Monday, and today I met with the seminar leaders to talk about specific goals/needs; and now I feel completely rejuvenated about my work and I am so incredibly excited about being a part of this! A 30-minute conversation suggested multiple avenues of inquiry, including a completely new approach to analyzing the texts I'm working with; I'm completing a dissertation chapter as part of the seminar, and the focus of that chapter already seems infinitely clearer; and it looks like I'm going to learn to digitize print-based texts and maybe create a digital edition of one of the hard-to-access texts I'm working with in another chapter. All of this used to seem totally beyond my realm of capabilities. These things also provide more potential for non-academic and semi-academic job searches, which is huge since I should be on the market next year.

I think this is the kick in the pants I've been needing to be able to actually set work time for myself and make some progress on my dissertation.

And even the unnerds can appreciate this: they decided to fully fund seminar participants, so I can focus on my dissertation instead of TAing this semester, and just today I got confirmation that I will get a summer stipend even though I'm technically a year beyond eligibility for that, so we will be able to pay all our bills this summer and not just a few of them :)

Tl;dr I am a big nerd who is excited about nerdy things and also I'm getting continued paychecks.

  • That's so exciting! I don't really get digitizing or technology but I totally get where you're coming from about learning and seminars and feeling rejuvenated about your career and future. Congratulations! Sounds like you're really going to get a lot out of it.

  • That's awesome! Go mimi! Would love to hear about your dissertation sometime.

I have started working on pre work for the semester. We are starting our dissertation proposals this semester.
I would love to use TB for BF'ing research ;) However, I think I am going to do something with nutrition focused physical assessment. It's the hottest topic among RDs right now.

  • @Meimsx Don't worry - I talk the talk pretty well, but half the time I'm faking it ;)

@ken&kendra It is pretty amazing. My institution is pretty awesome about supporting humanities grad students, but this is just an ideal situation for me.

@lwrightenator It's not so bad at my university - we do have to put in our time teaching a few semesters of freshman comp, but we never have to teach/TA more than 1 class/semester and my last 3 semesters have been a pretty cush assignment. It's just extra good news because I was planning to do this seminar in addition to TAing, and now I don't have to!
