Climbing Out of Crib

So my husband is handy and started building my daughter a twin bed. We felt she was getting ready for this big step, so he went out, bought wood, and started, etc. She has been able to climb out for a while but rarely did. Now all of the sudden, 3 nights ago, she climbs out at least 25 times at night before passing out around 10:30/11pm. SO LATE. We've tried not saying a word and just putting her back in many times. Or very firmly telling her it's bedtime. Getting nowhere.

Anyway, it will take another few weeks before he is done with the bed, as he can only really work on it on weekends. Until then, is there anything we can do? Or do we just have to suck it up until the bed is ready? Bedtime is just SO frustrating all of the sudden, and her morning crankiness is showing as she's not getting enough sleep. Thank you for any advice.

  • We are at this point too. B has climbed out of his crib multiple times. We are switching rooms so once he goes to the other room I think we are going to transition his bed.

  • If she's climbing out of the crib it isn't safe for her to sleep in it. While you wait for the bed is either have her sleep on just a mattress on the floor (with or without the box spring) or I'd see if your crib has a side that comes off to make a toddler daybed for now. Once the novelty has worn off and she doesn't have the challenge if climbing out, she'll fall asleep earlier.

    This.
  • Time to get rid of the crib!

  • I must make people aware of my situation regarding crawling out of the crib.  My son did it 2 times during naptime one day.  He was 22 months at the time.  He broke his left arm and had a full arm cast for 5 weeks.  It was awful!  If your child is crawling out of the crib, take it down and just put the mattress on the floor while you wait for hubby to finish the bed.  It is better to be safe!
I have read multiple times in parents magazine that children rarely break a bone from climbing out of the crib.  Not in my case!  :(

  • Oh my! Sorry to hear that Ccole. Thank you, yes, putting the mattress on the floor in the mean time seems to be my best bet.

  • I've heard if the back of the crib is higher than the front, people will often turn the crib around.  Or if there isn't the risk of of a large gap, people have taken out the bottom of the crib and put the mattress right on the floor.  Good luck!
