WWYD??

So I have this facebook friend, not so much of a "friend" but we used to work together and let me tell you she's an odd ball. Like I don't think she's mentally all the way there. I remember her telling me at work how she was late because she had a miscarriage, but then later on she has a baby and said it was one of those " I didn't know I was pregnant" things that she had thought she miscarried. Well ANYWAYS she commented on one of my statuses (one where I was updating people on my LO's weight) and she commented saying she goes by the philosophy that the baby will eat when he's hungry.

Well she posted a picture of her 4 month old baby and my stomach immediately turned... He is SO tiny and looks very unhealthy... I asked her how much he weighs and she says "9 pounds"

I said my 3 week old weighs 9 pounds 4 ounces, and she said yeah he's a slow grower.

Ladies.. Is this normal? He was not premature, weighed over 7 pounds at birth. (I creeped her page)
I'm seriously concerned for this baby's life.. But don't want to make any calls if slow growing is normal and it's okay for him to only weigh 9 pounds at 4 months old...!

WWYD???

Edit- for asking a dumbass question! Eeek

Re: WWYD??

  • I agree, I know I shouldn't.. Just the saying a picture is worth a thousand words really applies here... The picture is what got me so concerned

  • I'm not sure what you should do but I know you shouldn't post a picture of someone else's baby on here.

This. 9 lbs does sound small for his age to me though, but I have no idea, my baby gained fast (born 6.12 and was 11.3 at 5 weeks)

I'm going to go ahead and apologize now for even asking, it felt wrong just typing it. Like I said though... This picture... He looks like he has no body fat at all..... It's very scary.. Maybe I'm just looking at my chunky baby too much though.. :-/
  • I would definitely be concerned too. I would be surprised if it is healthy for a 4 month old to weigh 9 pounds.

  • I know that it's not unheard of for a baby to be that small at that age. My cousin's baby was probably around that size too. However, she was between 5-6 lbs at birth. I'm not sure what you should do...maybe curiously ask what pedi they go to and make sure her answer isn't something crazy like "oh we don't see anyone, we don't believe in doctors". Because if they're seeing a pedi regularly, like you do for the first year, it will get caught. Idk if that's a good idea, but it's all I've got for suggestions :)

That helps!! Thank you!! I would just feel terrible if something happened to him and I didn't do anything
  • That does sound really tiny. My LO is 9 pounds at 5 weeks and she was 6 1/2 at birth. Agree with asking about dr.

  • I assume this person takes her child to a pediatrician and I'm sure they are aware and possibly intervening in some way. The baby could also have some kind of growth retardation or failure to thrive issue, not every parent will air their child's medical issues on social media.
  • Maybe be a little more friendly and ask questions, kind of like your looking for advice, but really you'll just be trying to find out if she does take him to a pediatrician regularly. (Like, "who's your pediatrician, I'm looking to possibly switch") That would be my main concern. If she isn't taking him, then there needs to be some kind of action taken.

  • Based on the WHO growth chart I just looked at it would put him in the 20th (ish) percentile which isn't anything to be alarmed about. My DD was perfectly healthy and hovered between 10-20th percentile her whole first year. Some babies just have to be in the lower percentiles, it's the way averages/bell curves work really.

I haven't seen the picture that you are talking about though so maybe I'm off base but I personally wouldn't think anything on it if he's still on the growth chart.

4month old 9 lb baby is way off the lower end of the chart, below the 5th percentile when I just looked
  • Everything I've read has said baby should double their birth weight by three months. So I guess it depends what he weighed when born.

From my understanding 9lbs is about 4kgs so it would put him higher than that - at least on this version on the WHO website
