I hear you... I hate that it feels like you need soooo much of it just to survive. Even taking the kids to the park costs money in terms of burning fuel in our vehicles. Especially in the winter around here, low-cost outdoor activities with a toddler just don't happen.
DH and I are currently having a difference of opinion with the IRS as well. Long story short - our bank sent us 1 (of 3) documents for our 2011 taxes but send the IRS 3 of 3. Now the IRS is demanding $1500 in taxes & penalties & fees. I wrote a very nice letter stating I wasn't paying a damn thing but once I finally got the missing docs from our bank I would happily amend my tax return... No ones banging on our just yet but I'm sure we'll get put on some awful watch list now.
@kescalera I can't remember if it was high school or early on in undergrad but my mom did my taxes for me and made a mistake and I got a letter from the IRS saying they were going to freeze my accounts if I didn't pay what I owed. I think I had like $200 in my bank account. I was not making much money at all so I'm not sure how I owed money, but I know I owed a really small amount. I just remember laughing at the idea of my one account with almost no money in it being frozen. They don't mess around.
We ended up going with our state's plan - GA but there was a lot of back and forth before deciding.
In googling 529 in an attempt to remember why we choose the plan we did I saw that AMEX has a credit card that you can get 2% back and have it deposited directly into a fidelity 529 account. Although I do enjoy the miles I currently get this is an interesting reward option.
My ILs called DH asking what 529 plan we opened because they want to open their own plan. I guess they want to have money saved in a different account. I'll have to wait and see what happens.
Re: NBR: I hate money!!
I love money.... As in, please, give me lots.
But, agreed that I hate dealing with it, giving it out to people, or addressing the lack of it. And, I'm an accountant for a living.
Good luck.
