sleeping through the night?

I was just curious how many LOs are sleeping through the night.  We put DS down at about 8:30 and he usually gets up around 3:00/4:00 to eat.  I probably wouldn't get up with him if he was using it as a pacifier and just sleeping but he still eats at least 5 oz during this time so I still feel like he needs that extra amount during the night.  Do you guys have suggestions or this or when did you little ones go a whole night?  Mine will be 2 months on Sunday.

Re: sleeping through the night?

  • If he's hungry he is going to wake up, regardless of how old he gets. The long stretch of sleep you're getting from him now is great!

The sleep books I have all state that technically a 5 - 6 hour stretch is STTN. It just doesn't coincide with when you would like to get up, unfortunately.

My DS is 10 weeks, 1 day. Just the last 3 nights he slept 9:30-6:30. We didn't do anything differently, apparently he was just adjusting his schedule on his own. I do think once he started the longer stretches it's probably easier for him to continue as he gets used to not eating in the MOTN.

    Good luck.

  • We are trying the "12 hours sleep by twelve weeks old" method. My SIL did it with our niece and swears by it. We are still two weeks out from the start of official "training", but have started to try and get her on the schedule the book suggests. She goes down at 7 (fusses in her crib till about 8 or so), but then sleeps until the next morning. Sometimes she wakes up to feed once, and sometimes she just sleeps right through.
  • My daughter didn't sleep without waking until she was 2 1/2....

What book is this? I think sleep training isn't supposed to start until 4-6 months.

I have a friend with a 4 year-old that doesn't STTN. They tried Ferber (repeatedly). A lot of good that did them...

  • Right now LO goes to bed around 10pm and wakes at 430am. He will then go back down until usually 730am.

I am amazed at his sleep schedule! DS1 is 4 and sometimes gets up at night!!

The book is called "twelve hours' sleep by twelve weeks old" by Suzy Giordano. A friend of ours did it as well.
  • I think 2mo is a little early to try to sleep train through the night but basically your baby already is. 5 hrs is considers STTN so based on the time you're putting him down you may want to try to push that off till maybe an hour or two later then it will be on your schedule of sleep. Mine is 10 weeks now and goes down around 10pm and normally wakes around 3,4,or 5. Just depends...but the. Goes back to sleep till at least 7 so she's doing good. However that all goes to crap when she's going through a growth spurt or wonder week or whatever else! It's just early to really try a schedule still..as you see above some take years to STTN!
  • We've been loosely starting the 12 hours by 12 weeks scheduling. My twin boys are 14 weeks.

Some days are better than others. But we've had a couple of amazing nights. One slept ten hours between feedings! His brother woke up mid way through so I didn't get to sleep the whole time. But I am not complaining.

  • We feel blessed to get a four hour stretch occasionally. We have an 8:00pm 11:30pm 3:00am and 6:30am feed right now

  • I'm glad I'm not the only one who is completely confused as to how 7.5 hours is not sleeping through the night. 10 weeks old here and we struggle to get to sleep before 11 and pray we make it to 3. My 15 lb baby boy needs to eat! Ha or at least he wants to. Count your blessings darling.

I got 5 hours of sleep in a row last night and I swear it was like the fucking clouds parted and angels were singing when I got up for that 3:30am feeding.

Then a had to change a poopsplosion and didn't end up getting back to sleep before leaving for work at 6:30. Whomp whomp.

Just had to get that out there. Babies will be babies - they need to eat and poop through the night and I count any stretch of sleep as a blessing.

ETA: I only got 5 hours because H and I share MOTN feedings. We got a 3 hour stretch than a 2 hour stretch. That's how I get my 5 hours. lol

  • I feed my LO on demand and at 8 weeks she sleeps for an 8 or 10 hour stretch every night, wakes up at 6am for a feeding then sleeps again till 10 like clock work. I didnt do anything specific to get her on this schedule except follow her lead. Every baby is different and if yours is waking up hungry at night I wouldn't try to drop that feeding. My LO just naturally dropped her MOTN feeding, but if she started waking up again I'd follow her lead. I'd say consider yourself a lucky one for getting 6-7 hours.

  • Ugh I'd give my first born for 7.5 hours sleep. LO is 7 weeks and sleeps from around 1130 until 330 most nights. We have a hard time getting him to sleep any earlier and an even harder time getting him back to bed. DH and I are only surviving because I go to bed at 8 and he takes care of him until LO sleeps then he goes to bed and I get up at 330 and take care of him until I have to get ready for work around 7.

  • DS1 started sleeping 7p-7a at eight weeks. I didn't do anything specific, other than feed him maybe five minutes before he normally ate. He's almost five and still loves his sleep. He has never suffered as far as growth goes, so sleeping twelve hours hasn't hurt him. But I also didn't force it on him.

Fast forward to DS2, and I am walking on air if he sleeps five hours. He is starting to do that more often at nine weeks (almost ten). Twice, he even let me sleep seven hours! No idea why he did it, and I cannot recreate the events that caused it. Oh well.

I say all of that to let the FTMs know that literally every child is different. They are going to wake up when they need you. They don't do it to spite you. Promise.

Same boat here! And he's going through his six week growth spurt now (7 weeks) and he's eating a lot! And has suddenly decided that sleep is over rated..
  • Wow, DD1 didn't start sleeping through the night until 9 mos. When I went back to work at 9 weeks she reverse cycled and actually started waking up more until she adjusted.

DD2 is starting to sleep better now and by that I mean she usually sleeps from 8pm to 1:30 and then is up again at 3am. That's fine with me at this point.

  • I'm also sick of these STTN posts! I've been up since 2 am with my baby because of belly pain and gas poop that wouldnt pass. I'm lucky if he sleeps 3 hours. And even if he sleeps 3 or 4 hours I can't sleep because of f&*% $@# insomnia. So STFU

Same here! L had a fluke 5.5 hr stretch one night last week, I walked around all the next day like I had won the lottery!

She's only 5 weeks, so a bit behind most people here, but I consider myself lucky any time we get anything over her typical 3-2-1 schedule (3 hr stretch, 2 hr stretch, 1 hr stretch, then up wanting to cluster feed/fight sleep for around 5 hours).
  • I feel blessed my LO sleeps 6-7 hours every other night! When she doesn't sleep that long I get 4 hrs, then then 3, then another 4. I feel pretty darn lucky, but I'm dreading transitioning from the RnP to the crib

me too!!!   DS sleeps fairly well in the RnP (definitely not through the night!) and I've been trying to transition him to the crib for naps.  Yeah, not going so well.  Today he fell asleep for a half hour and then woke up screaming.  He's snuggly in the RnP and there's so much space in the crib.
