Miscarriage/Pregnancy Loss

(Ticker Warning) Intro and question re: rising hcg after miscarriage

Hi ladies - We got our BFP on 12/22/13 and just this week I started spotting and cramping. I had an u/s on Wednesday which showed no signs of pregnancy and my betas were 318.

Fast forward to this morning. I had an appointment with my OB, who confirmed I was miscarrying as the bleeding got heavier. He had me get more bloodwork, and my betas came back today at 340. Since my betas went up, my OB wants me to go back on Monday or more bloodwork to make sure this is not an ectopic pregnancy.

After hearing this news, I immediately turned to Dr. Google, and everything I found freaked my freak. My bleeding is about that of a heavy period, my cramps feel like stronger period cramps, and I don't have any sharp pains. I ended up calling my doctor back after consulting the internets, and he said that since he didn't see anything concerning on my u/s and since my betas only went up a tad (which he advised is not uncommon during a miscarriage), he was not terribly concerned with it being ectopic and was asking me to get more bloodwork as a precaution. If my betas continue to rise, then we would discuss the plan at that point.

So, I guess my question is: have any of you ladies had your hcg levels go up while miscarrying, and it turned out it wasn't ectopic?

TIA for any light you can shed. We are sad, bummed, and now a bit apprehensive.

  • I'm sorry you are going through this. That happened to me but it was because all the debris didn't leave when I miscarried. I ended up with a D&C after 2 rounds of Cytotec. My concern with yours is that your dr did an u/s and found no signs of pregnancy. Good luck and let us know.

  • I just found out that my miscarriage was most likely caused by a rare condition called a partial molar pregnancy (waiting for genetic tests after my D&C to confirm). I was 12 weeks along and my baby actually developed into a fetus, although it was not ever possible for it to be viable. It is possible that you could have had a molar pregnancy (NOT a diagnosis and this is a rare condition; get the blood tests for sure. I'm just telling you what happened to me). But my doctor told me that if your HCG levels continue to rise or don't drop after the miscarriage it could mean that residual tissue from the mutated tissue/fetus is growing and from my understanding, basically tricks your body into thinking you are pregnant even though you're not. This has a small chance of causing cancer (a SMALL chance, and it is very curable). I will have to get my blood drawn at least once a month for a year to make sure my HCG goes to, and stays at zero. My doctor also said women with a molar pregnancy usually bleed more after the inevitable m/c. I was told I need to avoid pregnancy for a year, which is very disappointing but the good news is my doctor told me it does not affect chances for future miscarriages and plenty of women go on to have healthy pregnancies afterwards.

WebMD has a pretty good description of molar pregnancy. I'm not sure if I explained it well or exactly right, as I just found this out today. I don't mean to scare you, but I'm just telling you what happened to me and why HCG levels might not have dropped. It's so rare that it only happens to around 1/1500 pregnant women, so it's quite possible this does not apply to you. I don't know if it's better or worse than other possibilities.

Best article I've found on molar pregnancy as of today. Though again, I don't recommend internet self-diagnosis.

  • Sorry, I don't have a happy story, but this did happen to me. When I went in at 6w5d they only found an empty sac and said they didn't see an ectopic. The doctors weren't concerned and actually didn't want to keep tracking my numbers down. I pressed them to, and I'm glad I did because they went up and down for three weeks before they finally said I needed another ultrasound. I wasn't in severe pain like you hear about, but I was bleeding heavier than a normal period for me. They found the ectopic and I had surgery the same day. Hopefully your story doesn't end like mine, but I thought it might be nice to hear another one.

  • Thanks everyone for the responses. I went in for BW yesterday, and my levels went from 340 to 14 in 3 days, so my doctor said I am just having a natural miscarriage and is not worried about ectopic. I passed a lot of tissue and clots over the weekend and my bleeding has gotten much lighter and my cramping is almost gone. Just looking forward to moving on now.
