Cradle Cap

Hey ladies I've been gone for about 2 and half weeks for Christmas break from work. Missed keeping up with everyone. I do have a question. My LO has cradle cap. She also has the fullest head of hair I've ever seen on a baby. I'm really torn on how to go about treating it. My husband and I used a Cradle Cap shampoo on her last night and were able to get a significant amount of flakes off. Now her head smells like soured milk. Now I have this overwhelming desire that I have to fix this problem as quickly as I can in order to help her.  She of course is not affected by this at all and would have probably been fine if I would have left it alone, but my mother in law will not leave me alone about it, so we caved and you already know the rest of the story. My concerns. She has hair so she can't be left looking oily. And she has hair...lol...I don't want it to fall out either. Any advice on how we should proceed?

Re: Cradle Cap

  • What have you tried? The first go-to is some sort of oil and gentle massage with a brush (baby oil, coconut oil, etc) before bath time.  Yes, it can leave the hair oily.  If this doesn't work, you can try an anti-dandruff shampoo.  Leave it on 5-10 minutes and be super careful about not getting it in LO's eyes (it burns!).  You can do this every day if you want or a couple times a week.

I used mustela shampoo, and i took a fine toothed comb and scrapped the skin off. His hair was full of it, so i took a soft brush and brushed the flakes out. It took a few days for it to fully clear up.
No advice on why her hair smells bad.

  • Gentle Naturals is what I used.  Not sure if we like it. I think the cradle cap being disturbed has caused a smell, not necessarily the shampoo.  But I'm planning on double checking that tonight.  When I woke her up for her bottle this morning before leaving for work I could smell her.  I have to check to make sure it's not the shampoo. But I'm really thinking it's just her scalp.....
  • LO had bad cradle cap and I just rubbed olive oil on it, left it for about a half hour and then combed the hair back with a comb and then washed it out. I did that for three days straight and it was all gone. The hair is oily for those few days but it's temporary
  • I'm probably echoing others, but I've used a bit of baby oil on his scalp and then took a fine tooth comb and brushed through his hair for a few minutes to get most of the flakes up. Then it's into the bath and a shampoo or two to get the oil out. I've also used Head & Shoulders, but I think the baby oil worked better for him. I actually have to do it again soon bc it came back.

  • Harper had it and it took her hair with it. It also spread to her face, arms, and legs. CRAZY! My pedi said head and shoulders. I used that but it just helped temporarily. It eventually cleared on its own. I did that about 2x a week.
  • It might be the scaliness of the cradle cap that makes it cradle cap.  It's also pretty waxy feeling.  Whereas normal dandruff is just dry flaking.....
  • Another head and shoulders user. We used selson for a while, but it made her hair smell like a rotten egg fart and it didnt seem to work after awhile. I use the two in one shampoo/conditioner H & S and it smells like green apples and makes her hair shiny and soft. It seems to be working.

  • We use Neutrogena T Gel shampoo.  It doesn't smell great but it works.  Our doctor told us not to scrape at it with a comb but massage the shampoo in with a washcloth using light circles because anything more forceful would just make his skin sore.

  • We used mustela and it cleared it up. It was the mustela be be baby shampoo not the one specifically for cradle cap but it worked and it actually smells good.

  • I used coconut oil, let it sit for ten minutes, and then brushed the flakes out with a soft brush before her bath.  It made her smell like a macaroon.  Mmmmm.
  • Glad you asked this OP. LOs cradle cap has come back and I actually have some H &S I'm going to use, so hopefully that will help.

  • I treat it like eczema, and have BabyGanics Eczema body wash/shampoo. I definitely see a difference.

  • Has anyone done any of these things and their child's hair not fall out?  Just wondering.  It really is a huge part of her now and not that it matters because it's superficial but if she loses any where the cradle cap is she will have a bald top and tons of hair around the sides making her look like she has mange or something. Like this kid has locks not just hair. It's below her shoulders dry right now.  If I can find a method that may be more gentle and salvage her hair I will probably start there. In the end I will do what she needs me to do even if that means some hair loss to cure her of this.  Just wondering if anyone did not lose hair.........I sort of teared up at the thought that by me beginning this process I may have messed up her having such beautiful hair.......when I was told to leave it alone by her doctor. I feel awful at the thought of it actually.....

  • I'd keep going with Gentle Naturals.  It doesn't smell great, but it's made to treat cradle cap.  It worked well for DS2, but I had to use it about 3 times.  I tried other natural remedies first, but those didn't work.  I was like you, once I started treating it....I wanted it gone, and fast!  Anyway, I'd try two or three more times before you switch solutions.

Also, if it helps for the oil, I washed DS2's hair with normal shampoo afterwards to take out the excess oils.
