WWYD- baby not drinking very much

For the past 3 days, DD has had runny diarrhea and hasn't seemed interested in eating or drinking her bottles. The diarrhea is progressively getting better... this morning she had a runny one, but this afternoon she just had a soft, more normal-looking poop (the first since Monday). She is acting normal- no extra fussiness or sleepiness. It's just her intake that worries me. She hasn't been eating as much at meals, and does not want to drink much. She'll drink 5 oz bottles in the morning and before bed, but will only drink 1.5-3 oz from her two middle-of-the-day bottles. This wouldn't be as big of a deal if she were drinking water out of her sippy cup, but she still can't get the hang of it.

She is still having wet diapers, although I don't think they're as wet as before she got sick. Would you wait it out since the poops seem to be improving and she's acting normal, or call the pedi tomorrow morning? I don't want things to get worse over the weekend.

Re: WWYD- baby not drinking very much

  • I feel like this is the go to answer for many baby oddities, but is it possible she's teething? We had a 2 weeks stint of diarrhea a ways back and also a couple days of less fluid intake. This coincided with DS's 9 month check up and the doctor saw that his gums were puffing up and said that the symptoms were teething related.

A call is never a bad bet in my opinion though if it's going to ease worry.

Haha. I am losing my mind. I even told DH yesterday that some babies get diarrhea and don't want to eat/drink when they're teething, so maybe that's what it is. She does have a couple of top teeth poking through, so it could be that. Thanks for reminding me that's a possibility!

  • As long as she's having wet diapers I wouldn't worry.  I would, however, make sure she's having large servings of yogurt at least once a day while she has the diarrhea.

I hope she feels better soon!

w Agree here. Can u try giving her water or pedialyte out of a regular cup( not a sippy)? Just to get something in her?
  • Good ideas, ladies. She did have yogurt yesterday at lunch. We're done with all our meals for today, but I will definitely give her more tomorrow. And she drinks well out of an open cup (with us helping, of course) so I'll try that too!

  • Any time my kids have had diarrhea and I've called the doctor, they remind me that it can take up to two weeks for a diarrhea bug to leave their system.  (And last year, my then 2yo DID have diarrhea for two weeks straight!)  Giving a probiotic can help get the digestive system on track (and yogurt which contains probiotics of course).

I'd just keep doing what you are doing and make sure she is getting enough fluid to have several wet diapers a day.  That said, if she has other symptoms (vomiting, fever), etc, it might be a good idea to call.
