No crib.

LO is 13 pounds and so she will soon not be able to sleep in her pack n play anymore. She is out of her rock n play and swing due to being able to sit up and roll over in both of them. We can't bedshare because my bed is not safe even pushed up against a wall and placing the mattress on the floor isn't an option due to the fact that we are living with my mom and she won't allow for this considering we have absolutely no where to put the frame once it is out of my room.
I cannot afford a crib on my own and so I am waiting for my dad to decide whether or not he is willing to help me pay for it. However, my dad is very hesitant to help me out since he is still very upset with me getting pregnant while still in college. It's a long long story.

I have no idea what to do if she grows out of her pack n play prior to me getting her a crib. Any advice is very appreciated!

Re: No crib.

  • Why can't she keep sleeping in her PNP?
  • Loading the player...
  • Why is the bed unsafe for bedsharing? And ditto to PP's question.

Have you tried craigslist for a crib? Or maybe contact your local crisis pregnancy center and ask if they could give you one. They can be a great resource for moms who need help.

  • We had a 1.5 year old baby stay over in our pack and play the other day - she just slept on it on the lowest setting (like the floor of the playpen) instead of the bassinet.

Would having a pool noodle under your fitted sheet so LO couldn't roll off help? We didn't start off trying to bed-share, but it happened and it works so well for us that I couldn't imagine anything else :)  We also "side-carred" a crib at first and that was a huge life-saver. We got a minicrib from Craigslist, but my friend did it with a $50 crib from Ikea and it worked great both ways.

That said, I'm the one posting about LO not taking naps, so take my advice with a grain of salt!

  • Yup - the 2.5yr old I watch still takes his naps in the PnP.  The weight limit on the lower part is much higher.  You should be able to use that for quite a while longer.

  • The top level of the pnp has a 15 pound weight limit and she is 13 pounds. I dont like the Idea of keeping her so low to the ground since she almost always needs me to rub her head so she can fall back asleep. I know I'm being picky...
I'm saving up for a crib from Ikea though since those are so inexpensive. Thank you!

  • Keep checking Craigslist, too. I was going to suggest Ikea as well.

  • I'm on team "are you sure your bed isn't safe for bedsharing"! Some people use a pool noodle (like @jmcgra06 suggested), and I use a body pillow (it's just DS and me in bed and I have a queen size, so there's plenty of room). I am a huge fan of bedsharing, and your LO can then get all the snuggles and head-rubs she needs :)

  • Have you tried any consignment shops for a crib?  You can get pretty nice ones for less than $100 - good luck.

  • My sheets don't fit my bed properly. They are very loose. It just makes me nervous. I may just get new sheets though. Around 4am I gave in and let her sleep in my bed with me. I just pulled the sheets down so they weren't too loose. Now, I am laying in bed writing this as she is still sleeping. This never happens! Haha

  • And thank you everyone for the advice. I'm definitely wanting to bedshare even more now.

  • My kids slept in a PNP on trips and vacation until they were 2.

Something's not right here. Thirteen pounds seems very light for a weight limit on a baby item as big and expensive as a PNP.  Both of my kids were 13 pounds by the time they were about 3 months.  Who would pay that much for a baby item that could only be used for a few months?

Have you considered looking at freecycle or Craig's List for a crib?

  • The bassinet portion has a 15 pound weight limit. I would rather not have her sleeping in the bottom portion at night where I can't easily comfort her.

  • We have this crib. It's $70. You can buy used bedding, but even if you get new, ask you need is a sheet mattress protector.

Also, don't forget as your LO learns to sit up on her own and the pull to standing in the next handful of months, you will have to lower the crib mattress then anyways.

IMO, it's a lot harder to reach to the bottom of the crib vs. the bottom of the PNP. With that said, I think my LO is way more comfortable in his crib then the PNP.

  • My 25 lb almost 11 month old sleeps in his PNP. He absolutely will not sleep in his crib, lol! I keep the PNP right next to my side of the bed, and while not the most comfortable, I can reach him in the bottom to comfort him while in bed myself. He splits the night between the PNP and bedsharing with us.
