Are your offices/schools open MLK Day (1/20)? I'm off and DD has been asking to go to the Crayola Factory. We went once in the summer and I couldn't believe how packed it was with families, not just camps. I took her during NJ Teacher Convention, so even though it was just NJ school that were out, not PA, it was still pretty packed by the middle of the day. I'm wondering how bad MLK will be.

I work for a university. We are technically closed but offer limited student services from 9-3. Staff can volunteer to work for extra pay or a day of leave.

I have never had off for MLK day. DH is off b/c the stock market is closed. Our DC is open but I know some are closed and obviously the schools are all off. Not sure how crayola factory will be (we were there once on a weekend in summer). If you decide to go, maybe go when they first open.

I suggest go when they first open just in case. I took a day off in December and we took the kids and it was empty. Even thought it will be a holiday, the employees we spoke to said that winter is a very slow season so you might now see the crowds. See if there is a coupon floating around online....we had $3 per ticket which was nice. Have fun!

Kids' school is closed, but it's not a holiday for me so I am taking the day off. Just this week I have declined two meetings added to my schedule that day. I am sick of working on my days off!

DH and I are off, but daycare is open. I think we're sending DS to daycare so we can tackle several home maintenance projects that are impossible to get done on the weekends. I'm really looking forward to it!

I work for the government, and DH works for a private media corporation. I used to work for non-profits and always had MLK day off. I think it's pretty common and would be busy at kids attractions.

The college I work at used to cancel classes on MLK day, but would still make staff work. Starting last year they finally gave us the day off too. So I'm off! I agree with others - if you go to a busy place right when they open, that works best. We've done that with a few other popular kids' places and it has always worked out for us.

I'm off because the stock market is closed. DH is off as well. For some reason, his company follows the market (and then gets a bunch of other holidays as well).

So we're giving our nanny the day off and we'll do something as a family.

My company is closed; however, we use that day to have our annual meeting offsite. I have to figure out how to take my pumping breaks since it's constant meetings. I also have to drive quite a distance to get there and for some reason there is always horrible weather that day. It will only be my 3rd day away from my baby so I will still be trying to get in the swing of things. Just wish we could have it off entirely...

DH works for a govt contractor so he's off. I usually follow the local court schedule so I would normally be off but instead I'm using the day to catch up on some projects. We haven't decided whether to take the kids to our DCP that day or not yet.

Fun fact - in Virginia the Friday before MLK day is Lee/Jackson day and all state government offices are closed. So the courts and other state employees actually have a 4 day weekend.

I'm off. My company's owners are formal state employees so we follow the state's holiday schedule. DH is federal so he has off too. We'll be taking the kids to daycare.

DS does not have school and they instead encourage a day if service. So I will be taking PTO to volunteer with him.

Have you been? I never went before they renovated but we've been there 3 times since May and LOVE it! I took DS twice, just before a year and at about 1 1/2. He's really too young, although if DH comes I may take him too now that he's a little older. Basically everything goes in him mouth. DD has been 3 and it's perfect for her. She loves arts and crafts and can spend hours there. My SIL took her 5 year old and said they ran threw it in an hour, but maybe he's not really an arts and crafts kid.

I have never had it off, so it didn't even occur to me if DS would have school. He doesn't. I haven't received anything saying their childcare is closed, so I'm guessing they're open. I hope, as I am finally getting some day shifts at work again.

Yep, we're open. I work in the staffing department for a call center of a major retailer, and we're only closed on Christmas (some departments are open on Thanksgiving, so my teammates who work Thursdays have to work then too). I used to work as a representative in the call center, so my experience was that we were never busy on official holidays (because people assumed we were closed), but were extremely busy the day after. On both days, my department tends to be very busy optimizing productivity.

I'm working and so is DH, but daycare is closed. *sigh* pretty sure DH is taking the day off. Though, it's a city holiday, too and that's where he works so I wonder if it would be "cheaper: to hire a baby sitter since he'd be getting holiday pay and holiday leave.

I have to work, but DD's school is closed. I live near DC, so there are a hell of a lot of people here with government jobs. Most kid-friendly activities would be crowded here.

I am a teacher. The kids in my school district are off but we have to go in because it is an inservice day for the teachers. All of my other teacher friends are off. I don't mind going in. I get a break from the students, get to hang out with my colleagues and get to go out to lunch with them.

DH is off. DD will be spending the day with him.

My company and my husband's company are both off, but since we are accountants we both have to work on closing year-end. If I had to guess is say it would be crowded, but if you go early it might not be as bad. I'm glad you posted this because I live in the area and had no idea the crayola factory was so close! I can't wait to take DD when she's older!!
