Milk Intake Question

I know this gets talked about a lot, but I've never really paid attention to the answers because we relied on nursing on demand throughout the day and night, and just had dairy snacks throughout the day as bonus. Now that I am approaching the second trimester my supply is tanking and I know he needs to take in more WCM to make up for it but I have never had to pay attention to his milk intake I just trusted my body was giving him what he needed. He is up all through the night and I think he's just hungry, he's used to picking at his food and making up calories at night with BM, but I just don't have it these days. I'm going to really start paying attention and making sure he is eating enough through the day but I have no idea how much milk he should be having in a day. I'm still nursing to sleep for comfort but not counting it as if he's getting any calories from it at all. TIA!

Re: Milk Intake Question

  • LO gets 15-20 oz a day. I space her milk out and she does not get it with meals so that she will eat more solids at mealtime.

  • @andreab7412 I think the difference probably depends on where your LO stands on the growth chart. Meaning if you have a peanut the pedi will probably recommend a little more and if you have a linebacker then they will probably recommend a little less. But I am no professional so I could be totally off on that.
Most definitely. He is 80% for height and 55% for weight. This is our Pedi's soap box issue. He says for nursing babies that 15 ounces of wcm is enough. Her baby still nurses so I chimed in. Non nursing babies he says 15-20. He doesn't like babies to "fill up " on milk. I guess I should be thankful his soap box issue is not really that bad. I hear it at every appointment.
I agree. My LO is a peanut (@10% for weight) and our pedi is big on her getting enough calories in a day.  We offer milk (15-20 oz) at specific times of the day and she has  yogurt/cheese etc with meals. We still nurse AM and PM but I do not really count that towards her totals as I know she is not getting much.
  • I was wondering the same. I am not PG, but am seriously low on milk due to being sick. LO still nurses 3-4 times a day, but I feel like she literally only gets a few sips each session. I have tried giving WCM without success, so we give lots of other dairy such as cheese, yogurt, ice cream, cream cheese, etc. We have a super small peanut (20 lbs and 31 in.). I will see what the pedi says next appt. Thanks for posting.
