Early Intervention

Yesterday at DS's 15 month appointment, the doctor asked how many words he is saying.  I told her about 3 - 4.  She said that if he isn't up to about 8 - 10 by his 18 month appointment, we would have to go to early intervention to check his development.

Anyone else have their doctor tell them this?

Re: Early Intervention

  • The pedi asked us about DS's talking at his 15 month appointment too. Our DS isn't saying words yet either. The doc did ask if he was babbling a lot, understanding the words we are saying to him, and pointing at those things we say (like "fan" and he points at the ceiling fan). He is doing all these things.

She did not mention an intervention, though.

I can tell you, the threshold for services at this age is very high, like 1 word or sign, and they pass, so I wouldn't worry. If there's no progress, have an eval, it doesn't hurt to check and it's free. To qualify for services here, child has to test more than 2 standard deviations below norm in 2 or more categories.
Thanks - that makes me feel better about the threshold.   She did say 3 months is a lot of time for development but she wanted us to be prepared should he need EI.

IMO - I think DS is "lazy" we all think he knows how to talk but is to lazy because he points and grunts and someone gets the object for him.   We are working on making him tell us what he wants/needs.

  • Also, kids have language spurts out of nowhere, I swear!  DD actually qualified for speech from Early Intervention, but I declined because I knew she was fine.  And she is!  Now she is saying all sorts of crap.  And it was out of the blue!
    I wouldn't worry :]

  • We have our appointment next week and I'm curious about what he says. We have a similar situation where they comprehend and follow simple instructions, but they don't attempt to speak. My coworker just IM'ed me and asked if the girls were talking yet, I said no, and she went on to tell me about her 14 month old's large vocabulary. THEN she said a-hole things like, "Uh oh, what are you going to do?" WTH.

  • My ds1 qualified for speech at 2. At 18 months he had a couple words. At 2 just a handful. He has a huge vocabulary now and is just working on articulation. He always loved speech therapy and still does. Keeps telling me he will never graduate.

  • I asked at her 12 month appt about speech. She was saying dada and nothing else, but I was concerned because she had been making more sounds but stopped. The doc said to give her 2 months and call EI if she hadn't made progress.

I used to refer people to EI regularly when I worked for the WIC program. It never hurts to get an eval, and even if your child does not need services, the therapist can give helpful advice.
