Career Advice

Two positions just opened up today at my job. I am pretty interested in both. One of them is in the same division/department that I am currently in and is a supervisor position. The 2nd is in the same division but different department and is technically a lateral move but, would actually pay more than the supervisor position.

I am really torn. I feel that if I apply for the supervisor position it would probably be better for my relationship with my director because I would still be applying for a job where I'd be working with/for her. If I apply for the other position and don't get it I wouldn't want my current boss to think I was trying to leave the division and somehow offend her.

I would really like to get out of my current position or even continue to do it and have them add it to one of the new positions if I were going to get it. I currently spend about 3 hours a week actually working so I am looking to move to a new position where I'd actually have something to do all day.

  • Well, which job do you want to do?  Do you want to manage other people?  I would focus first on what you think would be better for your career development and goals and then take others' perspectives (director, etc.) into account as a secondary concern.

  • If you are honestly interested in both, then I would apply for both. Your supervisor wouldn't be offended and you would have double the possibility of getting into a new position.

Honestly, I work for a government agency. My job (including the possibility of either of these positions) is pretty secure. I am already in the department that I wanted to be in and these positions will keep me in that department. That's why I am having such a tough time making a decision. I suppose the best thing for me to do is apply for both.

  • Negative Nelly maybe here, I'd really think about taking a supervisor position if you've never managed people and whether you feel like that experience would be really valuable or necessary in terms of your overall career path. I personally hate it and would take an equally interesting job without managerial responsibilities at the same or more pay in a second, unless the experience in management was something that I needed to fill a gap on my resume or to continue to move on & up professionally.

But by applying for both at least you'd see if you'd get an interview & if you get one for both you'd get more info  about expectations, etc, which would be great. If not, then that's ok too.  I'm sure your supervisor will understand.

The supervisor position doesn't actually supervise other people. It's the supervisor of a program. But, I have actually been an assistant director before so I'm comfortable with being in a management position. Interviewing internal applicants is mandatory so I'd definitely get to interview for the position. But, after a long talk with my supervisor yesterday, I will only be applying for the supervisor position and not the other one. If it works out, it'll be a great fit for me.

  • I agree with applying for both and seeing what happens.

I would give careful consideration to having to manage people.  It is a necessary evil to get to the "next level", but it is the biggest PIA.  For me, it feels like babysitting a lot of the time.  However, if your goal is career advancement, this may be the better option.

If you are content and just looking for something that is a notch up, but not a huge jump in responsibility, the non-supervisory position may be a better fit, especially since it pays better.

Don't be worried about offending your supervisor.  It is a normal thing for people to be looking for the next step in their career.  It only gets weird if you are applying for anything and everything, then it seems like you are just desperate to get out of there!
