Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

is this normal toddler behavior?

i have twins, a boy and a girl, and it's really hard not to compare the two, especially for a ftm who is extremely paranoid.  my girl is very active, likes to play around and is pretty rough and tumble.  she does have her moments where she sits and reads or plays by herself.  my boy however, can be very playful, but just not as much as her and likes to "lounge" more.  when we are downstairs, he cuddles and rolls around with a body pillow and is just "chill".  he likes to lie down and just rest or cuddle.  i don't think he's tired, though.  but the flip side is when we are upstairs, he does run around more, maybe because there is more space. anybody else have a toddler that's more prone to "lounging" sometimes? or is this something i should call the dr about?
thanks!

Re: is this normal toddler behavior?

  • I would say both are normal. My son sounds more like your daughter, he is extremely active and hardly ever sits still. However, my nephew sounds more like your son. He will sit and watch an entire movie and is just generally a chill kid. I wouldn't worry about it, it just sounds like they have different personalities.

  • I would think that's fine. Every kid is different. We've actually asked the doctor about the opposite--DS is on the go ALL THE TIME and never sits still. I'd say enjoy your lounger ;-) while he enjoys lounging (because I'm sure at some point that will change too!)

If your son has always been this way and it's not sudden, new behavior then it's probably just the way he is.
This.  My DD is like that.
  • It sounds normal but maybe he just needs more space to run around as you mentioned he's more active upstairs. That was the case with my son. Downstairs I had restrain him to the living room which is rather small and he was rather inactive but would run like a madman upstairs so one day I removed the gate and give him more space to have downstairs and now there is no stopping him. He plays in the kitchen drives his walker around the dining room table and even started climbing

  • My LO is like your son. She's just very chill and likes to cuddle and read or watch a show. She runs around and plays but isn't as active as other toddlers I've been around.

  • Probably normal, but bring it up to the doctor during your next appointment just in case.

Lethargy can happen when a heart defect goes undiagnosed at birth ... so not to freak you out, since it is probably not the case, you may want to just bring it up to the doctor.

hm...i looked up lethargy and my understanding is that it is when a child is extremely inactive and tired all the time.  i don't know if ds then fits this definition of lethargy, but i will definitely let our pedi know.  i had a heart defect as a child and had surgery to repair it, so this will be on my radar.  thanks.
