Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Pointing?

My DD had her 12 month appointment today (she will be 13 months in a week) and isn't pointing. My pedi seemed a little concerned at first, but said since she is waving and clapping that it's fine. When did your child start pointing?

Re: Pointing?

  • Hmm, I'd say about 9.5-10 months. She's a pretty bossy baby, so I think that's why. She will be 13 months on Friday.

  • I thought pointing is a 12-15m milestone. DS didn't start pointing until he was at least 13 m. He is 14m now and he still points with his whole hand.

  • I didn't realize pointing specifically was an important milestone. My LO just turned 14 months (I was never brought up at her 12 month appt) and she just started doing it a week or two ago. She made signs before that to show what she wanted but we were never concerned that it be an actual pointing motion.
  • I was worried too. My LO didn't wave or clap until 13-14 months. He pointed at 15 months and it wasn't often. Usually he reached with his whole hand. I was also worried. At 18 moths he wasn't taking, not even mama or dada. At 18.5 moths he did a 180. Has a new word every day. Understands everything. Points and has a crazy little outgoing personality now. It can change in an instant. Try not to worry :). I know, easier said than done.
  • "Pointing" refers to several different skills: pointing to a desired item to communicate a want/need, pointing to a picture or object to answer a question, and pointing to show others something interesting (e.g. shared attention, which is key in social/emotional development).  The skills evolve between 9-18 months in most children.  You might want to ask your pedi to clarify what exactly she means by pointing at the next visit.  There are good lists of important milestones on the CDC website.
