"I don't know anything about autism, but your son--"

Oh, FFS. 

"I don't know anything about autism, but your son seems--"

Do tell. 

"I don't know anything about autism, but your son seems really social."

    This was a neighbor and classmate's mother upon learning that my kid is on an IEP for his HFA. The reply I would have loved to give before she scuttled off: "Thanks! We've worked our asses off to get him to this point. Nice to hear it's paying off. You should stick around for when he greets his teacher and tells her 'it's nice to meet you' for the hundredth time because he's got that part of the script wedged so firmly in there we can't dislodge it. Better yet, ask us over for a playdate. Do you have a train table?" 

    What's funny is she'd e-mailed the neighborhood offering up her nine-year-old's services as a car comparison guide for those looking to buy because he's obsessed with comparing makes, models, and features. I was sitting at my computer chanting "one of us, one of us."
