Misdiagnosed Miscarriage

I've mentioned this a few times on this board, but I wanted to post about it separately because I think it's important. With my first child, I was misdiagnosed with a blighted ovum because my doctor could not find the fetal pole after two separate ultrasounds. I think I was about seven weeks pregnant at the time of the second u/s. I was told I could get a second opinion if I wanted to, but that it was highly unlikely that there was still a baby and that I should probably just schedule a D&C. When we left the office I found a website--www.misdiagnosedmiscarriage.com and I wondered if these ladies' stories could be mine. I went to a get an ultrasound at a high tech facility and while it took them 20 minutes, they found my daughter, alive ad well. Best and worst 24 hours of my life, I always say. Obviously this is rare and I don't want to give anyone false hope, but I do want to say that doctors do misdiagnose miscarriages, sometimes adamantly. So if you are told you had a missed miscarriage or a blighted ovum, please get a second opinion, at least for peace of mind. If I hadn't done this, I would have inadvertently prevented my beautiful daughter Evangeline from entering this world.

  • I always recommend a second opinion in any circumstance. It never hurts to just have peace of mind knowing you were diagnosed correctly.
  • I can't believe that happened to you! Did you let your first OB know of their mistake?

You can also get blood work done before doing the D&C which is standard practice at my OB office. If your Levels are going down or close to 0 (like mine were) then you are miscarrying.

Might sound silly but I don't always trust doctors to not miss stuff but numbers don't lie.

ALWAYS check your numbers several times before any procedure!
  • @Vieve831 his office was right across the street so I marched on over to tell him. I wasn't mean--I was smiley and polite, thinking he'd be happy for me. He just looked at me and asked, "So, when do you want to schedule your next appointment?" I told him I wouldn't be scheduling another appointment and just walked back out. @eburgmama I just saw your update, and am so happy for you! It's crazy/wonderful, isn't it? Phew! @adriennevazquez this was one of the reasons why I dropped that doc and gave him negative reviews--he didn't even seem interested in my levels. He said they could still be high even with a blighted ovum and that's why I was still having morning sickness and other symptoms. The man has awards all over his office, too. Unbelievable.
