DCP policy on informing of another child's illness?

DS is in daycare Mon, Tues, Wed & Fri.  We dropped him off this morning and were informed that a child who was with him Mon - Wed has been diagnosed with RSV.  Nothing severe, but their doctor said to keep him home until next week  The caregiver said that they found out yesterday (when DS wasn't there) and they moved the kids to another room for the day and washed down the entire room.  They're back in their regular room today.

I'm just curious since it's something they obviously need to tell parents about, how does your DC handle informing parents?  They told us when we got there and there was a sign hanging near the sign in board.  So if we had an issue with him being in that room today it was too late to get backup childcare.  DS also had a cough this morning, but didn't have any other symptoms of anything and we didn't know about the exposure to RSV so we didn't see anything wrong with sending him to daycare.  Now that we know, we spoke to our doctor's office and we are going to monitor the cough and possibly bring him in tomorrow to get checked out.

Re: DCP policy on informing of another child's illness?

  • Mine puts a sign on the classroom door once they find out (which relies on the parents of the sick kid informing the DC in the first place).

  • Loading the player...
  • For DD1's school and DD2's daycare center, they send an email that explains what the child (who is kept anonymous) was diagnosed with, what steps they took to avoid additional infection (DD2 daycare center only), and an information sheet on the illness, including symptoms and treatment info as appropriate.
  • Thanks!  I figured this was a standard policy (just telling parents when they got there) but I just wanted to see what other places did.

  • For anything serious we get emails explaining what the illness is and symptoms to look for, it is then also posted on doors throughout the building. The notifications are sent schoolwide and will usually say whether it's first floor (infants and toddlers) or second floor (preschool and prek). If it is in my child's classroom the teachers will also mention it at pickup or dropoff.

  • Depending on severity and exposure, we get a sign, email or phone call.
DS born 8/8/09 and DD born 6/12/12.
  • We get a note in DS's bag at pickup

  • We go to a center so they will usually send as email and a paper home that says the classroom the child was in, the illness, and symptoms. They only do this for things like flu, RSV, hand foot mouth, etc.

Small in-home, so they just tell us at pickup. But when I taught at a chain center, we put a sign on the door and talked to parents at pickup.

    Exactly the same for me.

  • We get a sign on the door saying that the classroom has been exposed to x illness and what symptoms to look for.  In the toddler room there is pretty much always a sign for hand foot and mouth disease in the summer and pinkeye in the winter.

  • We get a written notice with details about the particular disease/illness (not specific to the kid).

  • Ugh, and of course his congestion has gotten worse since this morning so we've made a doctor appt for tomorrow.  Fingers crossed it's nothing too bad!

  • They send us an email (they communicate a lot that way). The email says how many cases they've had, what the illness/issue is (croup, RSV, HFM, Lice), whether it occurred in infant/toddler or preschool, the steps they've taken to keep it from spreading and then a link to the CDC site for the disease/issue. We keep getting daily updates until their are no more consecutive occurrences.

This is what happens at our current daycare. Same for our prior daycare.

  • Usually a note on the door but really only for specific illnesses, as outlined in the facility handbook. I think there might be state guidelines about it in some places perhaps?
  • Exposure notice posted next to the door of the classroom. That's it unless it's something that is running through the whole class, like the stomach bug last month.
  • Thanks all for your responses.  I wasn't on here sooner because unfortunately my son did contract RSV and was hospitalized for over a week.  Ugh!  I know it's not the daycare's fault and it's also not the fault of the parents of the other kid (they called in with his diagnosis when the received it, I believe), but seriously, I'd love to send his medical bills to one of them.

  • Also sorry your child got so ill and glad he is recovering, but the kid he got it from got it from someone who got it from someone...maybe everyone should just start swapping medical bills. And, one day your kid will pass on illnesses to other kids too....
  • I get that kids get sick and pass things along to everyone else, I was just venting my frustration and stress from seeing my 4 month old in the hospital for over week hooked up to oxygen, IVs, etc.
