Tummy time fail

DD is eight weeks and some change today ( 2 months exactly :-)) and has been doing tummy time on her activity may since she was 2 weeks old. DH and I will lay on both sides of her to try and encourage her to lift or turn her head but she is content to just lay there and lick the floor! Literally, like all 5-10 minutes we can get her to be content is spent licking her mat.

We also do tummy time on our chests which goes much better but I want her to get used to doing it on a flat surface as well.

Anyone else have a tummy time underachiever (I mean that in the dearest way possible) or any suggestions before she licks a hole through her play mat? :-p

  • Mason fails too. He'll just lay there without moving at all. It's like the minute we start tummy time he decides to play dead. We've tried the boppy under his chest too without any luck. He's 7w2d.

  • Maddie gets a little lazy during tummy time too but what I found works is putting a mirror near her face while she is doing it.  She LOVES looking at herself and so this has helped encourage her to lift her head a little higher in order to really see what is in front of her.  Maybe try putting something that is interesting to her in front of her face?
  • My DS will be 12 weeks tomorrow and still hates tummy time. I've used the boppy pillow and a rolled up blanket and he just lays there and "chews" on his hands or just gets mad. I just keep trying and hoping one day he will surprise me.
  • Marina hates it as well.  A few weeks ago she was lifting her head, but now she just lays there and madly grunts.  She will turn her head from side to side, but won't lift it for more than a millisecond.  I've tried putting toys in front, me in front, mirror in front and she just wants to get off her belly.

I will say she does have great head control though.  She does great "sit ups" (where I pull her into a sitting position), will keep her head up once sitting and lifts her head great off my shoulder, so I'm not too concerned.

  • Since 4 weeks every time I put him on his tummy he lifts his head so high he rolls back to his back.
  • Do you try it during "happy time?" If I put H on his belly about 30 minutes after eating = success. An hour or an hour and a half after eating when he's getting sleepy = fail.
  • LO usually gets angry during tummy time. She just hates it. She will either scream instantly or scream then pass out and sleep. She doesn't care about lifting her head up our rolling over.
I like the idea of putting her on her tummy after diaper changes. Maybe we will try that next time!

  • Yeah I have no luck.  DS just screams that I asked the day care lady and she said that she does tummy time with him so I don't have to so I am very grateful for that--I love my day care lady!
  • L doesn't care for it. I'm lucky to coax two minutes out of her before she starts fussing. She loves to lift her head up and look around whenever anyone holds her up, especially on their shoulder. And she has started to do really well lifting her head during "sit-ups" when I play with her. I might start the tummy time during diaper changes. That's a great idea!

  • It all depends on his mood. Sometimes he does great, sometimes it's. an angry scream fest.
  • All I'm gonna say is, I'm so glad I'm not the only one whose LO licks/sucks the mat during tummy time!
  • last night we did tummy time on my bed...she threw up all over the bed, my leg which was right near her, and then proceeded to face plant in it before I caught it and picked her up.  Does that count as tummy time fail?! ha
