DD has RSV and I need a push in the right direction

My DD has RSV. It's not the flu, but she's definitely sick...fever, bad cough, lots of mucus (she gags on and vomits mucus, poor thing) and is not eating as much. Now she's developed a really red and sore bottom, which the doctor attributed to the virus she has, so she cries and cringes in pain when I change her. This is her 4th day home with a fever and DH plans to stay home with her tomorrow, but I don't know if I should leave her with him because she is refusing any bottle and will only nurse. I'm already concerned about her getting enough fluids and staying hydrated. I don't want her to go a whole day refusing to eat and thus getting even less fluids because I'm not there to nurse her. This is my internal struggle though, and where I need a push to do the right thing: I feel like I need to go to work tomorrow. I'm a teacher and because of vacation and two days off for the bitter cold, my students have been back to school for two days, but I haven't been back yet. If I'm gone tomorrow, I'll have been gone from school for over three weeks by the time I go back next week. I've never been great at taking sick days because for some reason it makes me feel guilty, but I know I need to stop putting my job ahead of other things, especially now that I'm a mom. So, is it terrible if I call in for a third straight day?

  • Sorry, I had split this into two paragraphs to make it easier to read but it didn't post with it. Is that an iPad thing, or is it something else? I don't post very often...sorry.

  • I would call in. It's important your baby stays hydrated and if you know she won't take a bottle I would stay home. Dehydration could lead to hospitalization and you could end up needing more time off.
  • ditto PP.  I know the guilty feeling, but this is your baby and it sounds like she needs you right now.
  • Thanks ladies - exactly what I needed to hear. I better go get started on my sub plans! Thanks again for the push!
  • Get well soon, LO.

My LO just had RSV. She wouldn't eat either really. Her pedi told me she needed four wet, but not soaked diapers a day and she would manage to avoid dehydration. That put my mind at ease because she was easily peeing every six hours (far more often actually).

Could you go to work for a half day? Like your DH stays home in the morning and you come home after lunch?
  • No advice, but I wanted to say that I hope your LO feels better soon. RSV can be really awful. My best friend's son ended up in the hospital for 2 weeks with it when he was about 3 months old.

  • Thank you for the well-wishes and input, ladies! I'm staying home all day today. My hope is she'll be ready to stay home with someone else on Monday if she's not doing better yet... @JessicaKS - Did your LO have a lot of poopy diapers when she was sick? DD has been pooping like a newborn - seriously feels like almost all day, and sorry if TMI, but the consistency is more liquidy as well. Not sure that I'd call it diarrhea, but it is runnier. I think this has contributed to her sore bottom then, too. Also, how long did it take for your LO's fever to disappear? What was the timeframe of her illness? I just feel so bad that she feels so crummy and I'm anxious for some light at the end of the tunnel.
