If your baby had croup-

What was the treatment?

Emi has this awful, barking cough. I'm taking her to the pedi in the morning. I have a feeling its going to be a long night.

Any experiences?

  • 3 days of steroids.  Knocked it right out each time!

  • Steroids? Oral meds or in the nebulizer?

  • I was a croup baby and dd is a crouper.  We do the bundle up and take outside in the cold air.  We also do the steam shower but they don't work as well as the cold air from outside.  Elevate the bed.  Croup is awful and it takes a lot out of you because you are up all night. Croup is worse at night.  But try the cold air, it does help.
  • Steroid injection, tylenol and motrin alternating, steam showers (fortunately we have a steam shower, which helped a lot.)  She did end up in the emergency room with febrile seizures.  10% of kids with croup end up in the emergency room, who knew?
  • oh and the meds but I didn't mention them because you are looking for tonight but the dr might give you meds.
  • My son is just now getting over it...it's turned into a severely runny nose and watery eyes.  I took him to the doc on Saturday and he checked his blood oxygen levels, listened and watched him breathe.  He did prescribe an oral steroid (he's 2 yr. old), but said we could hold off on it if we were OK trying the cold air, cold water humidifier, etc. AND if it didn't get worse.  We haven't used it yet because steroids can cause hyperactivity and lack of sleep, and luckily we've been doing OK.  I have been giving him Motrin and Tylenol when he coughs really badly or tells me it hurts (obviously a little one can't tell you).  He is worse at night, but it's getting better.  Good luck!

  • Steriod shot, lots of nebulizers, and we used a lot of cool mist humidifiers. Sorry, get some coffee, it maybe a long night. Hope you all feel better in the a.m. Oh, and the fluid from the croup can cause ear infections so you may get an antibiotic for that.
  • Thanks ladies.

It is so scary, sounds like she can't catch her breath when she coughs. She will fall asleep, then become hysterical coughing/crying within seconds :(

  • My little one had it (a few weeks ago--so about 3.5 months old). ?They gave her a dose of an oral steroid, and she did improve after that. ?

    ?

Last year my oldest had broncholitis (sp?) and we had to do the nebulizer thing--I know how hard it is to do that. ?I hope we never have to again-- good luck (if you're doing it or if its yet to come). ?

    ?

You can try turning the shower on hot in the bathroom and bringing her in to breath in the steam. ? ?

    Good luck.?

  • Ditto the cold air and the steam. If it gets to the point where she's struggling to breathe (i.e. you can see the spaces between her ribs because she's working so hard) you need to take her into the ER ASAP for a breathing treatment.

If she's crying that much when she tries to sleep you might want to consider taking her outside for a bit (I know, it will suck since she's sleepy) and then into the steamy bathroom and see if that helps. Keep an eye on her. DS had a horrible bout of croup shortly before we moved and he ended up in the ER (it got really bad on a Sunday, of course).
