Pregnant after 35

Hello everyone...introduction

Hi, I'm Amie. I'm 36 and about 6 weeks prego with my 4th child. My first two are 13 and 15 and are from my ex hubby. My youngest is 3 1/2 and is with my current hubby. We decided on a second (my fourth) and wanted to have it before I turned 35 (He is much younger than me at 27). We have been trying for almost 2 years to no avail. My hubby actually has a vasectomy scheduled for the beginning of February because we had given up! Surprise, Christmas morning I get a positive pregnancy test!

I have a doctors appointment scheduled for the end of the month, although I wish it was sooner as I had a miscarriage before my youngest was born and I am way freaked out right now! What are the tests they run for women over 35? I have read and heard of all kinds of things including amnio's being routine for some doctors. Was wondering what advice anyone has here for an experienced mom but not so experienced on being prego over 35!

Thanks everyone!

  • Congratulations and welcome!   There are actually some non-invasive tests available now that should be made available before an amnio.  They go by the brand name of MaterniT21, Verifi, Panorama, etc., and screen for Trisomy 13, 18 & 21 via a simple blood test.

Other than that, I've had some extra ultrasounds, but that may have been due more to my recurrent losses than my age.

    Good luck!

How you're treated based on your age definitely seems to be dependent on your care providers and their policies. Nothing is different for us as far as tests or appointments.

Optional testing--which for us includes the NT scan, non-invasive blood test, CVS, and amnio--is handled the same way as if I was under 35. In our case, that meant we had to make an appointment on our own with the office that handles genetic counseling and testing. Our OB team made no recommendation for or against any tests, simply handing us the genetic counseling office's info with our first appointment information packet.

Initially, our insurance acted as if AMA would be enough for many of these tests to be covered, but even that seems to be panning out as untrue. Thus far, I haven't gotten any special treatment for being "old"! LOL.

FWIW, we did the Verifi prenatal blood test at 10w (results returned at 11w) and the anatomy scan. Otherwise, no other testing.

  • Routine amnios for someone over 35 sounds crazy...in fact I would think amnios are becoming less routine at any age because of the other, less invasive tests now available (as PP mentioned above). Congrats on your surprise and welcome to the board!

  • Congrats!  You are a young AMA'er!  don't let the tests scare you... as the op's have given you information regarding tests I will not except to again say that amnio's are NOT routine...

Best wishes and hope you have a wonderful pregnancy!

  • If you're team find out early like I was, there's a trisomy/genetic test called Harmony that can also tell you the gender! It's really expensive if you're under 35 but insurance covers it if you're over.
  • What a lovely Christmas surprise! Congrats and welcome.

  • Congratulations!  About extra testing ... the practice (5 midwives and 1 OB) that I'm going to has so far been pretty laid back about the AMA thing - basically saying you and your husband are healthy going into this so we're not worried about it.  I had a choice between the NT scan and blood tests (I think basically the quad screen with it) and Maternit21 and went with the Maternit21 for more certain results since my understanding was that the odds they give with the NT scan take age into account so were likely to give unnecessarily gloomy results.  Then so far the only extra thing I just found out about is a bunch of extra ultrasounds, but that seems to be because I'm over 38 which you're not!  The perinatoligist whose office the 20 week a/s was in recommended (solely because of age - the a/s results were all good) getting scans at 24, 28, and 32 weeks and then I think they said weekly after that.  Fitting all that into my schedule is a headache but on the other hand getting to see LO in ultrasounds is so fun that for now we are going with that recommendation and I'll have the scans.  I may fudge the schedule a little more when it comes to weekly ones - we'll see.
