Experienced mommies?!

Any input on whats better.
Crib mobile with projector, music, movement, heart sound

Or just a plain sound machine?

Working on my registry and I have read mobiles are good, a waste of money etc. Would the projector distract baby too much from sleeping?

Appreciate any input Thanks!

Re: Experienced mommies?!

  • We have a sound machine with a projector, but we almost never turn the projector part on. I mostly used it to distract my son during diaper changes, but never when he was falling asleep.

The ocean and rain sounds are the ones we use the most. I found the heartbeat to be very distracting and not at all comforting and my son was never able to fall asleep with that one on.

  • We have a sound machine and a star projector. We had a mobile, but as soon as DD was able to pull up it brace me a tool to help her stay awake. She loves the stars and since she got them we don't need a nightlight, they also turn off after 30-45mi. I got a white noise machine that plugs in and can take batteries, it is really nice to be able to travel with it and not need to worry about bringing a cord along.

  • We have a Mamas and Papas Galaxy for #2. It was pricey, but came highly recommended so we tried it out. It does everything and I think it was money well spent. Previously we just had a Sleep Sheep and a Tiny Love mobile which broke 3 times.

We have a sound machine with a projector and never turn it on, it is way to distracting for my DD, we just use the white noise portion of it.  We also do not have a mobile, I never found one I liked so I just never got one.

  • We've used the sleep sheep heart beat sounds since LO came home from the hospital. She is now 7 months. We also had a mobile but it is recommended that those are taken down before 6 months for safety purposes.

  • At first? Nothing. Later on it completely depends on the baby. And I would be careful about using anything as a sleep crutch, even a sound machine unless you live somewhere v noisy where you need to drown out sirens and traffic or neighbors. We have a Sleep Sheep and the best use we get is taking out the noise machine and letting her cuddle the stuffed animal part. We had a mobile. She finally noticed it when she was about 9 mos old. Lol. Just in time for her to start grabbing it so we had to take it down!
  • We still use our sound machines every night. Crib mobile was short lived. We also have the FP Rainforest Crib Soother and that thing has been a favorite for both of our kids. I would do something like that and a sound machine.

  • We love the sounds machine and still use it at almost 3 years old. I don't consider it a crutch. She can sleep without it.

I bought the the Tiny Love mobile that spins around and plays classical music. It's about $40 but worth the money. My daughter starter interacting with it at two months. That thing allowed me to go to the bathroom and shower. Well worth the money.

We had the FP crib soother and took it back. DD rolled into it and got a HUGE bump on her head. Although, I don't think this is common!

  • I got two different infant sound machines as a baby shower gift and both were awful. I ended up just using a radio in her room so she could hear voices and music. If we are traveling, we use a regular (adult) noise machine that we got at Bed Bath and Beyond.

  • I've been wanting to ask the same thing. I don't want to create dependency on sound machines but I also want the baby to get the sleep that she needs!
On a side note... I swear, I just saw some sort of horror story about the Fisher Price Sea Horse and how it is headed for recall - something about the batteries melting or smoking. I'm not savvy enough to put a link, but perhaps google it.
  • Sound machine was great to entertain her but never seemed to help her sleep.

Mobile- when she was younger, it was just to look at because the song was too short to see her off to sleep. Also, they have to be taken off the crib when baby starts sitting up and pulling up so they don't get strangled BT the thing. HOWEVER, after this, when DD started getting wiggly on the changing table, it was priceless. We hooked it up to the changing table and put it on and we were good to go. We're the only people I know that used the changing table all the way up through potty training without worry, because she loved that mobile so much.

Projector didn't use it as an infant but started using it around 2. It helps having a light that isn't a night light. Also, it helps with any bedtime behavior issues because she doesn't want to loose her stars. She doesn't mind that we leave it behind when we travel, as long as we have a night light along.
  • We have an Infantino crib entertainer that DH loved as an infant. It looks like a jar of fireflies, has lights and music, so we could put it on at night for him. But also when he got up in the morning, he would push the big button on it and enjoy some time to himself before I had to go in and get him.
  • It's odd..but we had an iPod Dock on ours and it's a life saver. I use and old mini and downloaded music, sounds...books. Dd was a better sleeper to talk radio for some reason. Plus we'll use it for a long time!
  • We have a sound machine with projector...the same one we used with DS1 is still going strong for DS2.  DS1 needed the sound machine until he was probably 3 and then randomly began asking me to turn it off some nights until finally, he just never asked for it so we moved it out of his room and he still sleeps just fine.

DS2 uses the sound and projector but I'm not concerned that it's a sleep crutch.  It's small and easy enough to pack when we travel and helps to drown out the noise of a hotel or just people talking at our parents' houses.  Even if he does need it well past 3, I know many adults who sleep with a fan on for white noise so I'm not concerned that we're scarring him.  He needs sleep, this helps him.
