Help: fear of doctor

edited January 2014 in July 2012 Moms
Because of everything she's been through, Em is terrified of the doctor. As soon as anyone in scrubs enters the room, she loses her mind. It breaks my heart. Her pedi suggested I get her a doctor's kit to help her overcome her fear of the stethoscope, so I got her the B brand one.

So far she will bring me the stethoscope and is OK with me "listening" to my chest, Nicholas, or her baby dolls, but freaks if I get close to her. Sometimes it scares her just to be near it and she throws it across the room, but I feel like we are at least making progress since she will touch it now.

So now I'd like to get another kit to have at my mom's but don't want to spend the buttload I spent on ours. Does anyone have a kit they like that doesn't cost the moon?

Also, any advice or tips to help her overcome this fear would be really awesome. I can't stand feeling her tremble and cry in my arms. :(

ETA: I want one for my mom's so that she gets used to them and is less afraid.

  • No suggestion on where to buy one but what about next appt, having the dr do the stethescope on you and pretend to do things on you then her?  Maybe if she see's its ok on you she will be ok with it as well.

    Our pedi is awesome and tried that, but it upset Em more. I've never seen a child more terrified in my life. She screamed for Daddy, flailed at the stethoscope to try and get it away from me...it was awful. Even the pedi had tears in her eyes by the end because she knows Em's history and why she's so afraid.

    @bellaxanthe, thanks for the suggestions!

    ETA: the pedi seemed to think Em's level of fear was abnormal. I don't know, I mean, I'm her mom so of course it looks worse to me. It just struck me as more serious when a doctor who sees frightened children all day thinks it's a really bad reaction.

  • We have the fisher price doctor kit. I let Cooper play with the otoscope while we wait, and we play with my stethoscope regularly. We also get a ton of exposure at the vet (i work at an animal hospital) and I think that will help. He loves trying to look in ears with his play otoscope (and the real one) there's also an episode of curious George where he is a doctor (doctor monkey) that Coop loves. But let her set the pace for the play.

  • So sorry to hear this,but I can definitely relate. Chloe doesn't like the MD either and clings to me when we are in the room. She cried when the MD tried to check her ears and throat. She also cried when I had to lay her down on the table to be measured. She loves watching Doc McStuffins on Disney, so now I try to explain when the check up part happens in hopes that she will be less fearful. I believe FP has a reasonably priced kit.
