If you have a nanny

DH and I are looking to hire a nany for our two kids this summer (ages 8 and 5). How did you find your nanny? I am trying to make sure we cover all bases as we look for care for this summer.

Also, did you have a contract for your nanny? I think we should, but DH thinks it's a little much for a nanny for such a short time. Thoughts?

Re: If you have a nanny

  • I think since it's just for the summer you should look for a student. I don't know that you need a formal contract, but discuss how you will handle any vacations- yours or hers. Also discuss if/where she will be allowed to drive them, car seat safety, expectations regarding activity, food, tv usage.

  • Exactly, I think expectations should be laid out, and I think that if they are written down, there is less opportunity fot miscommunication. Whether that's a formal contract or not, isn't really important... DH doesn't even think we need that written out.

I was thinking of posting an ad at the local community college to see if anyone was interested. I was also going to ask around my office. You never know if someone has a daughter or niece coming home from college that is looking for work.

  • I used care.com to find a PT nanny before, most of the responses I got were college students. It was cheap, $30 I think, and they do background checks as well. You might want to try that out.
