Low lying placenta?

Anyone have experience with this? My anatomy scan came back healthy and normal (yay!!), but doc noted that for 19 weeks+ my placenta is low in my uterus? Is this a typical precursor to placenta previa? I don't want to check doctor google so just curious if any if you ladies had this before.

Re: Low lying placenta?

  • I'd love info about this too.  Yesterday at my scan (18w5d) I was told the same thing.  The dr. seemed fairly confident that it would resolve, but I didn't get good info about how likely that will happen, what if it doesn't, etc.

  • I googled the shit out of this when I first started bleeding to see if it was a possible cause.

The placenta will usually move up as your uterus grows and it becomes a non issue. If it stays low and close to your cervix your doctor may opt to do a c section, but it's generally not an issue. Don't stress!
  • I was told (and shown!) my placenta is very low at my a/s yesterday. They even did a vaginal ultrasound after the scan to see how long. Currently she said it's not low enough to cause placenta previa (2cm and shorter I think) and that the placenta will move up even more as baby moves up.
  • I have marginal placenta previa which they found at my 12 week nt scan. I was put on pelvic rest, ( no sexy time ) :/ and I was told they'd check again at my 20 week scan to see it it had migrated up. Apparently in most cases it does move up. I went in at 15 weeks for an elective ultrasound and the sonographer told me that my placenta looked like it was in a normal place. She couldn't see anything to indicate placenta previa. I am now 18 weeks and I have taken myself off pelvic rest.

  • 90% of low lying placentas or placenta previas will resolve on their own by term.  Try not to worry.

I had a complete placenta previa early on with my second child, and by the next prenatal appt it had already moved off the cervix completely.

  • I had this with my first pregnancy, after stressing about it for weeks it did migrate on its own. Nothing to worry about this soon in pregnancy.
  • At my anatomy scan with DD my cervix was almost completely covered. I had a follow up u/s at 36 weeks and it was nowhere near where it had been. It is much more common for it to move than it is for it to stick around down there. GL!

  • I was diagnosed with a mild previa at 14 weeks, which was causing bleeding.  The doc told me that in most cases, it resolves itself as the baby and placenta grow, since things will shift around a bit.  DO NOT Google this, you will scare yourself!  I didn't recall what a "previa" was, so when I got home I googled it instead of looking it up in one of my maternity books.  Absolute worst case scenario is hospital bedrest (can't even sit or stand for more than a few minutes at a time), for fear of hemorrhaging/bleeding out.  Also will definitely have a C-section if it doesn't resolve itself.  We have another appointment tomorrow (16wk2d), so hoping it will have resolved itself already (I haven't had any more bleeding in the past 2 weeks, which is a good sign I think)
