How far away is your RE?

As I look for a new Dr. I have found there are not a lot of options for RE's, I have found two, one is 2 hours away and the other is 4 hours.  I'm still not sure if either is covered by my insurance they will let me know after Jan 2.
So how far do you drive to see your RE?
Anyone just use an OB?

Told IVF is the only option and have not found a clinic that will take me.

Re: How far away is your RE?

  • Mine's about 40 minutes away.  I think there may be some closer, but I like this one.  My insurance doesn't cover anything, so if I'm paying, I want to like my Dr.  If I were in your shoes, I would probably interview OB's closer to see if they will work with me and/or an RE so that you don't have to drive 2 or 4 hours all the time.

  • Mine is in the building right behind my OB's office so it is pretty convenient. If you have to travel a long way to see an RE I would suggest really liking them. You might want to try the one closest and if they don't "fit" then head to the other one.

Mine is roughly 45-60 min (depending on traffic) from my home, and about 20 min from work.

  • Thanks ladies.  Looks like I might want to interview OB's in the closest city 30 min away.  The ones in my tiny town can't do much we only have ultrasound techs two days a week and they have to send all the lab work out of town.

@Blackvelvet depending on what type of treatments you'd be considering, you would definitely want something reasonably close. IUIs (with injects) and IVFs, typically have a lot of monitoring appts.

True dat! I did IVF and I had to go in every morning for bloodwork and ultrasounds during stims.  I think I am the rare case on that, but I had to head there every morning before work.

  • My sister and Aunt live in the town 4 hours away I could stay there for a while if needed.  They can not do IVF at the clinic 2 hours away BOO they make you go to the one 4 hours away.  They mostly just give out drugs with no monitoring locally and that is not very helpful.  Looks like I will have some travel in my future.  I never though I would still be working on this 4.5 years after having my first.

  • I live in a pretty big suburb of Philadelphia, so my RE is about 10 minutes away.. maybe 15 with traffic.
  • My first RE was 40 minutes away, but for weekend monitoring I had to drive 1 hour to a downtown office. My current RE is 3.5 hours away, but he comes to my city 2x's a month and allows me to have all of my monitoring done with my OB. My RE is in charge of my care though and his nurses call and email me to keep up with my protocol.
    I'm 29. DH is 29.

  • My RE is about a ten minute walk, and unfortunately in my experience my OB was useless compared to my RE when it came to fertility issues. I even found that all the early things in pregnancy that seemed simple my OB wanted me back at RE for. But those travel times would be horrible, first time around we saw my RE for 10 months before we got KU and I was there almost daily for a decent portion of that time.

@amberbutt81 pulling from a previous post, yes our sons are about the same age and weird enough I live in philly.

TTC#1 May 2009- July 2010 on our own with no luck

Started with RE in August 2010, dx with unexplained IF and then finally our 3rd IUI cycle using Follistim and Trigger resulted in our wonderful little man.  Born 12/2/11

TTC#2 Never really prevented, but were careful early on as Dr. reccomended

Surprise BFP 12/16/13, started progesterone immediately as first numbers came back low, but betas were good.  Progesterone wasnt enough. Natural MC 12/24/13.

  • Thanks for the all the answers.  It looks like my best bet it to find an RE that will work with a closer OB at least to start with.  I have an appointment with an OB next week that has an ultrasound and small lab at his office so he can do some monitoring and I can get there in about 30 min if the roads are good.

  • Mine is about 20 minutes away. I would make the drive for a RE vs a OB. A lot of the testing like bloodwork isn't done at the RE anyway. In my case, since we are MFI we have only been to the RE's office once since starting in the beginning of November. All of our testing has been at a lab or at the uro who is about 20 minutes away as well.
I know this could be totally different for you and could change for me if we change treatments. Maybe a OB who works with a RE would work, but I think I would definitely at least have a consultation with a RE.

    January 2013 TTC #2
    September 2013 Repeat SA: Count= 1.7 million, Motility= 24%, Morphology= 2%
November 6th 1st Appointment with RE: diagnosed with severe MFI

CD 3 blood work for me. RE does not want to repeat my HSG/lap at this point,
but may want to before moving forward with any fertility treatments.
After seeing the uro, DH is currently taking lots of supplements and clomid to try to boost his count. We will have a repeat SA in February to see if it works.
    Follow up SA numbers are: Count= 4 million, Motility= 40%, Morphology= 1%
Uro wants us to have another follow up SA 5/9 to see if we see further improvement than we are back to the RE to make a game plan.

SA 5/9/2014 Count: 12 Million, Motility: 60%, and Morphology 2%. We will be doing iui #1 in late June

IUI #1 6/28 clomid + ovidrel, post wash count 3 million total sperm= BFN
