Birthmarks

@MissBHaven1024's shark fin got me thinking about birthmarks. Who has them and whose LO's have them?

My mom, myself, and all my siblings have lots of them. Some are more noticeable and get asked about - I have ones quarter size or larger on my calf, bicep area, and lower back. The one on my back is a little smaller than a dollar bill and purplish in color so I got asked a lot as a child if someone ever hit me. DD has a few, she had one above her lips that I thought was really cute when she was born and H hated but it has almost gone away. She has another one on almost the whole lower portion of one thumb that was barely noticeable when she was born but now is bright red and people ask if she sucks her thumb a lot which she doesn't.

Birthmarks aren't supposed to be genetic and they are supposed to fade away as you get older but that doesn't seem to be true for my family. Maybe we are special?

Re: Birthmarks

  • My mom has them on her back. I have little ones, also all over my back. With a few on my shoulders and arms.

I've never heard that they're supposed to fade away, though my brother's birthmarks would get white rings around them and then disappear.

There's none like what you've described in my family though. My largest birthmark might be the size of my pinky fingernail.

  • My mom, sister, dad, brother, and myself all jave birth marks. My sisters two LOs have a birthmark. My DS#1 doesnt have a birthmark but my DS#2 has two. A small red spot on his head, and at the base of his neck he has a cross that is slightly slanted, with a small spot to the left of it that almost resembles a star and its purple-ish in color. Most people find it either really weird or really fascinating.
  • I had one on my forehead but it faded before my first birthday, I think they called it an angel kiss or stork bite. The other one I have is at the base of my skull, right above my neck. All my brothers have the same one and the majority of my cousins from my dad's side have similar ones. It's really bizarre because my dad and all 4 if his brothers have it too. We call it The (last name) birthmark since so many of us have it.
  • I don't have any birth marks. Neither do DD or DS. I think only my brother has one out of my (4) siblings.

That is awesome and weird. My sister looked into birthmarks in graduate school to become an pediatric NP and everything claimed they are not genetic - that's what makes me so curious about them.

The craziest part is we have two adopted cousins and both that the same birthmark. Same color, size and shape as the rest of us. They were just meant to be in our family :)
  • My DD has a storkbite on the back of her neck. The doctor told me it might fade but probably wouldn't completely go away. She also has a birth mark on her left leg, in the exact same spot my mom has one. My mom looked into it once and it's called a cafe at lait mark? Or something like that. I have one too, but on my shoulder.
  • My dd was born w a birth mark on her leg. I thought it was the cutest thing. Until the doctor told me it had to be removed. So a few months ago and 3 years old she had it removed. They put her under and have her a epidural. It was hard. She couldn't walk for 24 hours and now she has a huge scar on her leg. They said it was a Nevis and would turn into cancer and become disfigured so it had to go :( but I have moles and birth marks and so does my husband. I'm hoping the new baby isn't born w one.

Mine had stork bites at top of the neck/hairline area. My oldest had a bright red one on her butt, which has since faded out. My youngest has a small one like this behind her knee.
  • DD has one behind her right ear on her scalp. When I showed our pedi, she said we will have to go to a dermatologist to have it looked at when she's older. The pedi said they like to keep an eye on ones that are on the head.

I don't have any birthmarks and neither does DH....or so we thought. When DD was born she had none. When she was about 2 months old we noticed some darker shading on her chest and arm. We asked the pedi about it because it was gradually getting darker and spreading onto her back. THEY FREAKED and sent us to a dermatologist and geneticist. They all thought it was a cafe au lait. Google that if you are bored. Turns out it's just hyper pigmentation. It's splotchy and covers half of her back, the same half of her chest and that same arm all the way to her pinky. It darkens with the sun in the summer and fades in the winter. It’s always noticeable to new doctors and we have to explain that its been checked out blah blah blah. Some people think its bruising but we've taught her that it’s her beauty mark and she's just special. I forget it’s there until someone asks about it.

Turns out DH has it on his arm but it's not as noticeable because of his arm hair. <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

I'm grateful it's not on her face and hopeful that this baby will get more of my genes. I don't look forward to the days when she becomes self-conscious about it.

DS has one right in the crease of his butt.  It took the grandparents a few times to figure out it wasn't poo when changing his diaper.  It's pretty big, about the size of a golf ball, and it's oddly shaped.  It's in the perfect spot, though.

Edit:  I  forgot to add that I have a very, very light and extremely small one in the middle of my left hand.  I don't think my DH has one.

  • I have 2 on my stomach.  One is brown and the other white.  Since I've gotten older, the white one has grown a bit.  My DD wasn't born with one, but one developed when she was 2 months old.  It's a little brown circle on her upper thigh.

  • I don't think my husband has any but I have two: A red mark on the side of my nose and on my right butt cheek.....I don't think my brother has any and if my mom did, she no longer has it because she was burnt on 95% of her body at the age of 2.

So it will be interesting to see!
  • Me and all my siblings do, the big beauty marks, mine is on my head under my hair so you can't see it. My sister has hers in front of her ear, my youngest brother has his on his chest, etc  (there's 6 of us).

My daughter actually has two big red blotches on her head that are bithmarks, they have A specific name, but I don't know it. They're hidden under her hair now and you can only see the second Lower one when you put her hair in a tight ponytail, so it's not an issue.

But, to answer your question, it seems genetic, since me and my siblings all had them. I don't know if DDs counts, since its a different type, lol.

  • TB didn't even tell me about being mentioned in this post! I'm just now catching up on everything from today (it's been a hectic day). In addition to my weird shark fin birthmark, my mom, both DD's, and I all have an identical birthmark on our right butt cheek!

  • I have none but DS has a dime sized light brown spot in the side of his butt cheek. His father has one in the exact same spot. I'm thinking they are both just hyper pigmentation.
  • I have a birthmark on the back of my knee that everyone stops to tell me that I have dirt on my leg if I wear shorts.
  • I have one on the right side of my neck. Its always been there.

  • No one in my family has an actual birth mark, but my oldest daughter has a beauty mark on her left palm.
  • None for me but I heard that a birthmark is a remnant from you previous life, and the reason for your death in it...
  • I have one on my knee and that's about if.

DS has a birth mark on his lower left area of his stomach. It's funny that he was conceived probably weeks after DH donated a kidney to his dad. And DH's largest scar is on his lower left area of his stomach. We said DS must have been marked. Lol

DS #1 born January 2010. DS #2 due June 2014.

  • I have a rash like mark on my back right below my neck. Its called a Strawberry mark I guess haha. Its like the size of my palm.
