12 hours between feedings???

My son is 14 weeks, 6.5 adjusted. The past few nights he will take a bottle around 7 PM and then I'll give him a bath and then he will fall sleep between 9 and 10 PM. But he won't wake up until around 6 or 7 AM the next morning. He has never done this before. He's gone at most 8 hours over night. Has anyone else's preemie done this? Thanks!

Re: 12 hours between feedings???

  • My pedi told us that over 5 hours between feedings, we have to wake him up. Luckily, he's always hungry so we haven't had to do that yet. I'm not sure what the answer for you should be. How is his weight gain? Is he super fussy if you try to wake him? If he needs the calories, I would wake him. He can prob eat in his sleep.

  • Is he eating a lot during the day? I "believe" (I am not a doctor) that the daily intake is what is most important.  if he is making up the feeding during the day you may be ok (I would still call the doctor). If you are BF'ing this is a bit harder to gauge.  track how long and how often he is eating during the day in case the pedi asks.

If everything looks good and he is sleeping that well enjoy it! if not you may have to start doing some night/dream feeds.  I was able to feed my son without waking him up. We BF but I'm not sure if that would work with a bottle.

    Good luck!

  • If he is FF it will stay with him longer. Resulting in longer sleeps. If he is EBF and he is gaining weight appropriately then things are fine
  • After a certain point, our pedi said to just let DS tell us when he was hungry. Once he started growing, he also slept 12 hours at night. I know when he's going through a growth spurt because he eats 84123 ounces a day and then sleeps for hours in between. As long as weight gain is consistent, I think you're fine! It's hard not to worry :)

  • Have you asked your pedi about it? I'd want to make sure my baby was getting enough to eat during the day and gaining weight appropriately. My girls are about 2 weeks younger than yours and 4 hours is a long stretch for them, but they are breast fed and every baby has different needs. Still, for one so young, I would double check with my pedi.

Thanks everyone for the responses! He's still gaining weight great! He's a little over 13 pounds now. He takes between 32-36 oz in a 24 hour period. He still eats every 4-5 hours during the day but has started to stretch it longer at night but this 12 hour stuff just started happening the past couple of days! And he is FF bc he has allergies and GERD so he's on alimentum.

  • Oh goodness!!!! Our pedi gave us the green light for sleeping at our 4 month checkup. He said let him sleep!!!! That being said your guy is eating very well. Our LO is about 6.5 months now and averaging 24 oz of formula a day. I think you should okay with your pefi but sounds like your little man is growing great!!!!

So he eats 8+ ounces at a time if he's eating every 4-5 hours for the other 12 hours in a day? Dang! I didn't even think that was possible for their stomach sizes at this point. Again, check with your pedi, but smaller more frequent meals might help with GERD if that's something with which you are struggling.

Well the 32-36 oz is when he eats every 4 hours and doesn't sleep for 12 hours. He takes 6 oz about every 4 hours usually. He hasn't slept that long since this post thankfully! I was getting worried! We go for our 4 month check up Febraury 5th so I will mention the sleeping thing then!
  • My LO did this a month ago and hasn't looked back. I don't believe in waking a baby so I don't and she's still growing well.

I see! Sounds like nothing to worry about, especially if he's not sleeping that long every night and is gaining weight well. :)
