Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Potty training vs. toddler bed

So my LO is 21 months old so its about that time to make some transitions.  She is definitely showing some signs of readiness for potty training. I was just wondering which have you all tackled first...potty training or toddler bed?  Only one transition at a time for this momma haha.

Re: Potty training vs. toddler bed

  • My DD PT around 26 months.  She started staying dry at night about 1 month or so later.  She is actually still in a crib.  We are planning to transition her to a toddler bed this month.  If she has to pee in the middle of the night she just calls my name and I go get her.

  • Unless she's showing signs of being ready to potty train, I don't think her being 21 months means that you HAVE to make transitions.  But I also don't think that once my kid hits a certain age that I need to move him from the crib if he's happily sleeping well/not trying to climb out.

If she's showing signs, you could introduce potty training.  If she's not showing signs, don't push it or make it a battle of wills.  Like PP mentioned, night training usually doesn't happen at the same time as daytime potty training so even if you potty train, she may still wear a diaper or pull up for awhile at night and not necessarily need the ability to get out of bed right away.
  • Ditto what other pps said.  DS is just 21 months, but we've been 'loosely PTing' for like, 2 months now.  If he's naked, he'll tell us when he has to pee, and he will sit on the toilet and pee.  But if he's wearing a diaper, he won't let us know when he has to go, just after he's gone lol.  Anyway, even when we really get going with PTing, I can't imagine he would be getting up at night to go for a while.  He always wakes up in the morning with a super full diaper so, unless I get KU and we need the crib, he's staying in it with all 4 sides.  I don't see any reason to release the beast because, I feel like that's what it would be like.  I don't want to think about what his room would look like in the morning if he had free reign at night :P
  • When it comes to cribs, if it's not broken don't fix it!  Just my opinion of course, but I think unless they are jumping out of the crib or you need it for a new baby I just don't see the point in moving them.  DD made the move at 2 3/4, but I would have kept her in it longer had we not needed it for her brother.

As for PTing she's a little young, but certainly not unheard of for a child to PT at this age.  If you think she's showing signs, then give it a try!
  • DD#1 potty trained at 21 months. At 2.5yrs she is still in her crib (her big girl bed is set up right next to the crib, she doesn't want to get out).  She started staying dry just before she turned 2.5 at night.

  • We actually did both at the same time. It was right when he turned 2. Baby sister was coming so we transitioned him from the crib. He was ready for potty training so we did that. Neither was related to the other. He did fine with both though we did have to sit/lay with him for the first couple weeks in the new bed... not fun when you're pregnant... but other than that he was fine.
